Driving from Hohenschwangau to Salzburg

I'm going to be in Hohenschwangau to see the castles then driving to Salzburg. I see it's about a 3 hour drive. I'm looking for some interesting places to stop along the route to break up the drive. It looks like I will be driving on a Sunday or Monday afternoon in September if that makes a difference.

Can I assume the castles will be more crowded on a Sunday than on a Monday morning? That may influence my schedule!

You can visit another two of Ludwig II's palaces on your way, Linderhof with its Swan Grotto between Reutte and Ettal, and/or Herrenchiemsee, his version of Versailles, on an island of that name in the Chiemsee near Prien.
