Visiting Neuschwanstein Castle with 2 young children

We'll be visiting in 2 weeks, and the current plan to get to Neuschwanstein Castle was to take the bus up to MarienBrucke, and then do the downhill trek to the castle. Seeing some pictures of the bridge (and the trek down), I am now having second thoughts. Is the bridge/lookout and the trek safe for 7 and 3 year old children? Should we consider walking up the castle, or doing the horse carriage instead? (Love the idea of the view from the bridge, but concerned for children's safety).

Thanks in advance.

The sides of the bridge have high fencing that should be more than adequate to keep your children in. It does however get pretty crowded at times, especially the end closest to the bus drop off.

Likewise the paths either up or down to the castle are well maintained and quite safe.

My daughter loved the carriage ride when she was 8. We walked the road down without any problems, and this was in winter with snow on the ground. Just fyi, there are a LOT of stairs inside Neuschwanstein, approximately 180.
