Will you need to book in advance in Berlin for Xmas dinner?

We are visiting Berlin for the first time on 24th December and were wondering whether or not you would need to book ahead for a decent Christmas dinner? Or are there plenty of options?

Thanks in advance :)

There are very few options apart from the restaurants of the large hotels so I'd definitely prebook. Germans do not eat out on Christmas Eve, most restaurants will be closed.

Thanks for the quick reply! Is this the same for Christmas day too?

I'd book to be on the safe side for the 25th. The big meal and celebrations in Germany are generally on the 24th and some restaurants will be open - many Christmas markets open on the 25th as so some museums - so call ahead and check.

I would definitely book in advance. Speak to your hotel concierge for some advice. Berlin is sufficiently large that you will find something but your choices may be limited. As mentioned earlier, Xmas Eve is the big holiday in Germany.

Many years ago our family was in Vienna for Christmas and nothing was open. We were staying in a small hotel without dinner service and all other hotels were limited to their guests on Xmas Eve.. We discovered the restaurant problem on Christmas Eve and made alternate plans. We purchased champagne, wurst, cheese, chocolates etc from a grocery store and had our own festive dinner complete with a small tree picked up on the street and decorations cut out of advertisements. At midnight we went to a local church for Mass. Not what we had planned but it was one of our best Christmases.

Go with the flow and enjoy.
