Bremen with Family

Hi, thinking of coming in early December for the Christmas markets with wife and two kids, 10 and 8.Where is good to stay to give easy enough access to the markets and what are the must see sights please?

Have been to the Munich markets and want now to see how the north compares.

Hi margaret, we have been to bremen twice for xmas markets. First time stayed in star inn columbus, good hotel at the time, but is in the immediate area of the train station. Last year we stayed in Motel one, newly opened, but they do not have family rooms. In terms of access, bremen is great, ten minutes by tram from airport for 2.40. The markets and shoping in bremen are compact enough, but quite good. There is also the waterfront shopping centre accesible by tram, but we did not venture there. Two nights is plenty due to good flight times. Catherine. Wexford

I just staied at the 'Hotel Hanseat' in Bremen, it's right at the train station so a little walk or tram ride to the old town, but the breakfast is so good and the main tram and bus station is just across the street.

Bremen was just nice to wander around the Schnoor www.bremen-tourism.de/schnoor-quarter-bremen have a look at the statue of the Town musicians of Bremen and the Roland, but this was in summer, so don't know how this will be during winter.

If you have a little time on your hand you might like to take the train to Bremerhaven and visit the klimahaus-bremerhaven.de/en/home/home.html… or the www.dah-bremerhaven.de//ENG/english.php both are very interessting.

hi margaritaville,

i hope you found a hotel for your family, there are plenty of them in the centre, of course, which should be more or less on the same level. basically all the main sights in bremen are in walking distance in the old town, i.e. roland statue, market square, st peter's cathedral, schnoor-quarter and so on. you can check on more on bremen-tourism.de

nevertheless, the best way to explore the city is by bicycle. it might be a little cold in winter, but if you fancy the best and cheapest way to discover bremen, you should rent bikes, e.g. at the adfc bike rental right by the train station. make sure to check out the bürgerpark, bremen's privately financed big park, inspired by nyc's central park(not kidding). the proper christmas market is right in the centre of town and you'll find the schlachtezauber right by the river, a medieval sort of market, very nice as well. both are very crowded in the evening hours tho.

for shopping and food you could find your way from the centre (obernstrasse/domsheide), along the ostertorsteinweg(passing the kunsthalle) into bremen's vibrant student and artist quarter (viertel) with loads of bars and shops.

i can give you more information on request, if you want.

have fun,
