We are going to rent a car and drive ourselves from the Arrecife cruise port to Timanmfaya... How early do they start the tours there? Is there anything we should be aware of in advance? When we leave we will drive to the Cesar Manrique Foundation... anything we should know in advance? I assume it is not difficult to get into either of these tourist spots...

I have not been to the Timanfaya National Park for sometime but reading on here there are said to be queues forming to get into the car park and it was advisable to go early morning. As I understand it coaches etc are given priority. You then have to park and go around by bus as a tour. The Cesar Manrique Foundation there wasn't too many people around at the time which was in early December.

Hope others going more recent can give you better advice

Hi

Make sure you have a good map.

You should allow at least an hour to drive to Timanfaya NP from the port. Opening times are 9.45 - 17.45 (for more details, see http://www.turismolanzarote.com/en/centros-turisticos/the-fire-mountains-timanfaya/5464 ). Depending on season and time of day, you could wait up to an hour to get into the park when it's at its busiest (but don't be put off, it's definitely worth it!).

The drive nearby through the wine country - La Geria - on the LZ 30 is stunning and you really should do it either on the way to TNP or on the way back, regardless of whether you're interested in wine. You might want to stop at the Monumento del Campesino - another Manrique creation - for a drink and wander round (it's free).

Was there a few years ago and arrived at the park at around 10 ish I think, the queues were obscene for the cars to get in, I would advise paying for a tour through last minute travel tbh as the coaches get priority.

That isn't so easy from a cruise ship as the tour buses don't pick up from the harbour

Really? I would have have thought that the various tour companies would be working with the cruises arriving on the island...

The cruise ships run their own tours at a higher price and are not going to be pleased at people coming in and under cutting them so I guess there may be a restriction on it happening (but only guessing)

We did the tour independently driving there ourselves, we arrived at about 0930 and the queue was reasonably small. But by 1000 hours the queue gets longer and longer.

I would advise aiming to get there for 0900 and then you should have no problems getting in reasonably quickly.
