Which seaside town to pick near Barcelona?

Hi, we are considering Barcelona and the surrounding area for our spring break next year, second half of April. It will be for 7 days. We would like to split those days between Barcelona and a historical seaside town not too far. I understand we might not be able to swim but still want a beautiful beach for walking and enjoying the scenery. Interested in doing some local day trips if accessible by public transportation. Does Blanes sound like a good idea for this purpose? Travelling with teenagers. Thank you!

Not really. If you're renting a car, then look further along the Costa Brava coast. Blanes is probably of limited interest.

For a good combination of history and beach, you could do a lot worse than Tarragona, which has good rail and bus links. You can visit plenty of coastal locations and also head inland to Montblanc.

I would choose Sitges. It is easy to get to from Barcelona using the Rodalies trains.

Both options already mentioned are great. If you want nice walks and history, you could also look at Cadaques or L'Escala.

As you are looking for ' historical seaside town' my first recommendation would be Begur. A small medieval town on the Costa Brava, with a church at it's heart and the remains of a castle atop. It is a stones throw from many beautiful cove beaches including Sa Riera, Aiguablava, Sa Tuna etc. and has views across th the natural marine park of the Medes Islands.

In this area there are many medieval towns and villages and the most popular include Pals and Pertallada. It is also a good area for hiking the GR92 long distance footpath.

The only drawback is, it is not easily accessible by public transport, as the train line heads inland north, after Blanes, and buses are not always frequent, so car hire is essential to make the most of this beautiful area.

If you need to rely on public transport, Tossa de Mar may be the place for you. It has an old town, with part of the ancient castle still standing. However, it is quiet remote for day trips from there further North, which is the 'best' part of the Costa Brava. It has no railway station, the nearest is Blanes.

Other places which may interest you, if you decide to hire a car, include Calella de Palafrugell, Llafranc, Tamariu and further north next to L'Escala: Empuries and Sant Marti D'Empuries. Inland take a look at Besalu.

Just a few suggestions ...
