Funicular to Magic Fountain light show?

We plan to attend the evening light show at the Magic Fountain and would like to take the funicular to get there. I have found the information on several sites regarding the funicular to be confusing. Is it possible to get there using the funicular only, or do I need a combination of transportation methods to get to the fountain? Can I take the funicular from the beach?

You don't need to go up onto Montjuic at all. The Magic Fountain is not on the hill, it is at the base of the lower end of the hill at ground level in front of the Palau Nacional / MNAC. Get the metro to Plaça de Espanya and walk along the avenue between the 'Venetian Towers'.

You can get the funicular then walk down the hill past the Olympic Stadium and then down the side of MNAC

kweglong, to respond to your last question - no, you can't take he funicular from the beach to Montjuic. You can, however, take the Old Port Cable Car (now called the Teleferico de Barcelona) from the beach to the port side of Montjuic (at Miramar). From there, you will need to walk about 30 minutes along and down the hill to the fountain (Google Maps shows a couple of ways to walk - we always walked down Av. Miramar to the Olympic Stadium and down alongside MNAC, as described by Doff from the funicular). Caveat- there are often long lines at the Sant Sebastia tower of the Teleferico, so you may wind up having to take a cab, or a long combination of bus and metro. As Doff says, your best bet is to take the metro to Placa Espanya and walk through the towers to the MNAC.
