The trains in Spain, mainly in the plains...

Hello Madrid experts... Two of us are hoping to fly into Madrid early, and then board the Ave Seville train by early afternoon. I have data on flights and the speed train, but have this question: What is the best way to get to the Seville train from the airport? Also, we are over 60- can we purchase the Tarjeta Dorada on arrival at the airport or the nearest train station? Muchas gracias por su ayuda.

At Madrid airport you can find RENFE ticket sales. Just depends which terminal. The Terminal 4 which is separate from 1, 2 & 3 and is the new one also has the local CERCANIAS train which runs to Atocha station. Now if you buy your Tarjeta Dorada card at this Renfe office then your Mad-Sev train you also benefit from a free Cercanias ride (which anyway is quite modest at 2.50 E) and can take a Cercanias ticket however you should use this ticket within 3 hours of the AVE train time departure. Get the info at Renfe ticket office. If arriving at Terminals 1, 2 or 3 you can take a free shuttle bus round to 4. Bear in mind that on the long distance trains you can benefit from some trains that are offering PROMO cheaper fares so these discounted fares may be equivalent of normal full fare less Tarjeta Dorada fare depending on day of travel. A walk up fare using the seniors card will of course be great if you have some flexibility for your Madrid departure train time.

Another way from airport to Atocha is the airport express bus which ends at Atocha and costs E. 5 a trip.

please note you do not have to buy the tarjeta dorada to be avail of the free cercanias ride, this free section is part of your madrid to sevilla ticket.

also note that the discounted tarjeta dorada ticket is not alway the cheapest ticket because the discount is given on a full fare ticket. if the train you are taking has promotion tickets like the promo, promo+, mesa, it will always be cheaper than buying with the tarjeta dorado. if they are no discounted tickets, then the discount offered with use of the tarjeta dorada will be cheaper.
