1st time to Abruzzo 4-5 nts, where to base ourselves ?

Hi we are going to be in Rome mid to late Sept and would like to spend 4-5 nights in a country village with good simple local food and wine to enjoy as we do a little exploring. Thought we’d pick up a car and drive from Rome. Will just have finished a 10 day tour so fancy something simple and relaxing. We’ve read about Abruzzo region and sounds lively but really need some suggestions if where to start looking as it’s a big region. Any suggestions please would be great. We are thinking somewhere that has a bar or restaurant or 2 to enjoy in the evening and some nice simple local food and markets etc.

Many thanks

My suggestion - always - is Sulmona. Not a village but a town of 24,000. It is located in a great position to explore the wider area and a great place to wander and around and chill on down days. There are plenty of good restaurants and bars, a twice-weekly market and lots of culture to soak up too. There is a great English language website all about the town if you Google it.

Sulmona is a good suggestion; so is L'Aquila, although unfortunately it is still damaged since the earthquake of 2009, it is a very beautiful town rich in monuments. Anyway, I think a little visit to both Sulmona and L'Aquila is to recommend when spending 4-5 nights in the region.

If you prefer a village, consider the area of the National Park: Pescasseroli, Scanno, Barrea, Villetta Barrea...

Thank you I’ll definately check out these smaller villages, it all looks like such a beautiful region. We’re keen foodies and would love to taste some nice local produce, what are the local specialties in this area?

Sure - try Scanno, Pacentro, Celano, Prezza etc. Plenty of good day trips from Sulmona.

Sulmona is famous for its confetti (sugared, almond candies) and red garlic. Abruzzo cucina includes arrosticini lamb skewers, chitarra pasta, great seafood on the 'Costa dei Trabocchi' and much else besides. Excellent wines too such as Montepulciano d'Abruzzo red, Cerasuolo rosé, Pecorino and Trebbiano whites.

Some specialties of L'Aquila are stracchino (soft creamy cheese) and torrone (nougat). But, as practically always in untouristy areas of Italy, in Abruzzo food is usually very good quality.

Have a look around Teramo. Direct connection from Rome via the A24 autostrada, loads of great towns and villages to explore, close to the Gran Sasso National Park and coastline, the only DOCG wine producing area in Abruzzo....and last but not least, great traditional food!

Happy planning!
