Hi! The first weeks in April often brings a real mix in weather and it's not uncommon for us to receive a final blast of winter, with snow and sub zero temperatures. On the other hand it can be the opposite - sunny and warm! I can only suggest that you watch the weather forecast when you are here and decide then if conditions are safe enough for hiking. If you are hiring a car remember that you'll need to have snow chains in your vehicle until April 15th
A trip to the coast might be an option where there are some great beach walks or a cycle ride along the coastal path that has just been completed. The coast is about an hour by car.
Alternatively, there are many great places to visit in and around L'Aquila, as well as organised activities such as a days cookery course.
Enjoy your trip!
Can you please recommend some places around L'Aquila?
We are more interested in hiking on mountains, lakes and forest.
We will not visit the coast.
As I mentioned before, your opportunities will very much be dictated by the weather conditions. Assuming the weather is fair, I'd suggest the following:
Campo Imperatore (30 minutes from L'Aquila). Plenty of hiking trails in a spectacular landscape. Medieval towns of Santo Stefano di Sessanio, Castel del Monte and (Rocca) Calascio all well worth a visit. This plateau is at 1500, so snow conditions are still a distinct possibility.
Lago di Campotosto (30 Minutes)
Fonte Cerreto and cable car up to the base of the Gran Sasso. There is a hiking trail from Fonte Cerreto, but it is a tough hike.
Prati di Tivo
Sulmona for a town visit
You'll need a car to access all of these places, as public transport is limited at best.
We will consider visiting Sulmona. Our vacation is on the 1st week of April, which is Easter.
Which day during Easter is best to visit Sulmona?
