Sorrento to Positano /Amalfi travel - Will this work?

So I know it's crazy busy in July in Italy- We fly into Naples and have a car that we are renting to drive to our B&B in Sorrento- but then leaving it there until we drive to pompeii one evening after capri.

Our first whole day we would like to go to Positano and Amalfi coast - I want the most enjoyable way to do this(reasonably priced if possible.. can't afford private drivers etc ) ... So I have read the forums and I see a couple options- please let me know what you see problematic with either idea.

1st- B&B Shuttle over to the bus location in Sorrento, take the SITA to Positano and then once in Positano take the ferry to Amalfi coast (is there just one kind of ferry? is there a slower more enjoyable one.. or is it simply a mode of transportation?) Then do the reverse to return back to Sorrento? (I was wondering if possibly the bus from Amalfi to Positano would be a bad return for a different vantage point?? Are the buses always packed for that leg ?)

2nd(not sure if this is a thing?) take the ferry from sorrento, to positano and then to amalfi and all ferries for return?

I guess I just want to know if the SITA form Sorrento to Positano is miserable (I read a few SITA horror stories)... or if it only gets bad on the leg between positano and Amalfi

and the Ferries- do I need to buy any of these tickets in advance? I can't make heads or tails of the schedule.

thanks for your assistance!

Yes, the SITA buses - all of them - will be miserable in July - use the ferries for every leg of this plan.

Not sure why you are getting a car at all - there are ZTLs in Sorrento and there is are two train options Naples to Sorrento - having a car is just an expansive risky (for fines) burden.

Stress - free is the ferries - anything on the road will be awful and a humongous waste of precious time given the ferries are faster

Hi

I agree, especially about renting a car. The traffic is horrendous and a lot of cars are scratched or dented. Apart from the two local trains that go from Naples to Herculaneum, Pompeii and Sorrento, there is also a coach from Naples Airport to Sorrento for 10 euros. A private driver from Naples Airport to your B&B should cost about 75 euros which is probably cheaper and a lot safer than renting a car.

www.curreriviaggi.it/eng/autolinee.html

There is only one morning ferry from Sorrento to Positano at 10:30 and costs nearly 20 euros. From Positano to Amalfi, it's 8 euros. The last ferry from Amalfi to Sorrento is 16:35. No need to buy tickets online but get to the ferry points early to buy tickets and get in the queue.

The ferry website below is easy to understand but it's not updated often enough and you need to look at the source.

The website below is accurate and you simply click on the arrow and click on your route.

A better option than the Sita bus is the Coast To Coast Coach. It's 15 euros return to Amalfi and an extra 6 euros if you get off at Positano and back on again to Amalfi. It's also becoming very popular and you need to get to the bus station at Sorrento to buy your tickets early and get in the queue, or line. Don't wait for the last coaches back, get there early. You can combine this with a ferry from Positano to Amalfi for 8 euros and they are frequent.

I was thinking of doing the Coast to Coast bus as well. I am basing my 4 days in Capri though so i would have to take ferry to sorrento. Do you know how often the coast to coast bus leaves sorrento and also how far is the ferry dock from where i need to get the bus? Thank you

Does the coast to coast stop in Sant'Agnello? It seems unclear on their site.

Hi

There are regular ferries from Capri to Positano which would cut out the need to go to Sorrento. However, the CTC Coach timetable is on post 2 and it's about 1300 metres from Marina Piccola, (Sorrento ferry point,) to the bus/train station. There is a lift up the cliff or you can walk. The Capri to Positano ferry website below has been recently updated but it's always best to check the source website.

www.positano.com/en/ferry-schedule…

The CTC Coach usually goes through St Agnello then turns right. It doesn't actually stop anywhere until it gets to Positano. It sometimes takes different routes to avoid traffic in Sorrento but I cannot remember. You might be able to flag it down at a bus stop but I've never seen anyone do this. Also, some of the coaches are full when they leave Sorrento bus station so they will not be able to pick up new passengers. Map of route is below. Also the main website also on post 2 has a "live chat" facility and you can ask them or email them. They speak perfect English.

Thanks Eddie. The only reason i wanted to do the bus ride is to be able to do the Amalfi Coast Drive. It’s either that or a private driver so if i take the ferry to Positano then i miss the drive. I do intend to take the ferry back though.

Hi Kay

Oh I see. If you look at the map of the route above, you'll see that the coach goes from Sorrento across country then you see a little bit of the coast before it reaches Positano. The main part of the Amalfi Drive, as far as the CTC Coach is concerned, is between Positano and Amalfi. Therefore, you could get the ferry to Positano, walk from the beach area up to the main road, then get the CTC Coach to Amalfi.

If you decide to take the ferry to Sorrento and get on the coach at the start point, the bus/train station is on the Corso Italia (main road) in Sorrento, opposite Piazza Lauro and the entrance is at Hotel Nice. It's a pleasant walk and you'll see some of Sorrento. The CTC Coach is red, air-conditioned and single decker, and stops at the top left hand corner of the bus station. You can buy tickets from the newsagents inside the station or an agent who usually arrives about 15 minutes before the coach and waits nearby with a red bag. An office behind the bus/train station also sells tickets.

I’m kind of upset that the CTC doesn’t go to Ravello

Hi again

There is a bus up to Ravello from Amalfi bus station and a coach. You can apparently buy tickets for this coach on the CTC Coach but I have not used it.
