A hotel in Milan

A hotel in Milan

We will be back to Milan at 15:35 by train from Luzern and need to flight back to US at 11:40am the next day. Should we stay a hotel in Malpensa airport area or a hotel near the Centrale station so that we still have a chance to visit the downtown area? Is the case that there is only one train schedule per day from Luzern to Milan?

I appreciate any suggestions.

Eunice

there is nothing in the immediate area of malpensa, so would stay in Milan city if you want to see some sights or even just have a relaxing last evening,

You'll need be at the airport by 9.40, so you have plenty of time to get the train in the morning.

Correction, 8.40 for US flights. Still plenty of time to get the train.

The regular bus to both the Milan airports from Centrale Station start to run from about 4:00 am onwards and it takes about an hour.

Would prefer the train to the bus, especially if it’s a weekday morning as traffic can be very heavy and any incident along the way has the potential to cause strong delays.

There are plenty of trains every day from Luzern to Milano Centrale Station requiring one change; but you are right that there only appears to be one direct train between the two destinations without requiring any change (Luzern-MilanoCentrale, 12:18-15:35, http://www.sbb.ch/en/home.html ).

Lucerne > Milano Centrale Station > next morning Malpensa Airport "flight back to US at 11:40am"... So, you are right that your easiest choices are either a hotel near Milano Centrale Station or one near Malpensa Airport. You can plan to "visit the downtown area" for both these hotel location alternative options. As stated further above in this thread, the next day, you should be at the airport by 08:40, and you should consider that transport from Milano Centrale to Malpensa Airport takes about 50 minutes. (For example, Malpensa airport trains are usually scheduled only every 30 mins, and there is a Centrale-MalpensaAirport train scheduled to run 07:55-08:46 - see transport links later in this paragraph-) So it really depends on what you feel about these logistical facts. For details of all the public transport options (train and bus) from Milan to Malpensa Airport, please read a forum thread from just last year, clearly entitled "Transportation to Milan (Malpensa) Airport" [ https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g18784… ].

For the option of a hotel at Malpensa Airport, you would use the left luggage facility at Milano Centrale Station, then use the Metro from Centrale to Duomo to "visit the downtown area". All of this was discussed in detail just in June this year when someone similarly asked: "city as a day trip... train from Monterossa, Cinque Terre to Milan... We leave for the USA the next day from Milan airport", see Post #5 [ https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g18784… ]. Some Malpensa hotels that forum contributors have used can be found here on one of the many threads on this topic, entitled "Airport Hotel Please" from last year [ https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g18784… ]; make sure to follow all the links in that thread. Or just search through Tripadvisor's own list of "Hotels near Malpensa Airport" [ https://www.tripadvisor.com.ph/HotelsNear-g1… ]. Of course double-check directly with the hotel about necessary arrangements for any available airport shuttle service.

There are a few hotels within a few blocks of the Milan Central station. I stayed at the Four Points Milan Center and was happy with it. It was about a 10 minute walk.

"There are a few hotels within a few blocks of the Milan Central station." - An understatement I guess... Any of the major hotel booking engines will find you around 50-100 options within 0.5 km of Milano Centrale Station; you can also click on the map option that they offer. It is the one area in Milan with the densest concentration of hotels. If you need to know more about the entire Stazione Centrale neighbourhood, interactive map showing local restaurant districts, and details for all the different important transport connections here, then I have all one page on this [ tinyurl.com/milano-centrale-around-station ].
