Economical sit out for a coffee around St Mark

Hi there

During an evening in St Mark this July which cafe should I look at for a not pricey coffee with family.

At the same time we get enough time to see people walking by and take in the atmosphere what St Mark is known for.

Any suggestions as I don't want to be too far away as well.

Thank you in advance

I doubt there are any seriously 'not pricey coffee' to be had anywhere in Piazza San Marco. The cheapest (relatively speaking) will be in a café without an orchestra.

The three cafes in the Piazza San Marco are Florian, Quadri and Lavena. They are all expensive. AFAIK there is no other cafe actually on the Piazza, but there are plenty that are nearby, and they will be much cheaper.

Bar Gelateria Al Todaro Dal 1948 (http://al-todaro.it/en/home/) is right on the waterside just around the corner from where St. Mark's square meets the waterfront at the two columns. Not cheap but not in the same price league as Harry's or Florian's. I've been there a few times to have a cold drink and watch people and boats go by. Have a look on Google maps/streetview; to get there walk towards the waterfront from the basilica or Campanile tower and it's just around the right hand corner.

No orchestra!

Nothing in San Marco Sqaure is inexpensive. IMO, it will set you back about 10 euro per person. I would buy a gelato and stroll with everyone else, if money is an issue.

As you are facing the Basilica, take a left (The Torre dell'Orologio - Clock Tower - will be on your left.) and quick right onto Calle de la Canonica. This is a little shopping street with slightly more reasonable places to stop for a coffee. Otherwise I would do as previously suggested; buy an ice cream and find a place to sit....acqua alta boards?! ...or continue to walk around. The only way to get a less expensive coffee at these famous cafes is to take your coffee standing up at the inside bar. If you sit outside, you will be paying for table service and an added music charge. Keep in mind that even if you decide to splurge on an outside table, paying the music charge doesn't necessarily guarantee any music!! One time we paid the charge, heard one selection, then the band took a long break!

A sit down coffee will probably see you paying in excess of twelve euro.

I am sure there are menu online for the Florian and the Quadri. Look these up and also look for any mandatory music supplements.
