2days in Venice after christmas

My family of six is planning to travel to Venice from Salzburg the 29th and 30th of December. I have heard much about the weather at this time. Is it advisable to visit at this time of the year or should we save Venice for another time of the year. If so, what would you recommend in lodging and activities before heading on to Rome.

Would expect it to be cold, as long as you know not a problem,

The 26th is a holiday so you will be somewhat limited. Venice will be busy because of the Holidays influx of tourists. Yes, it will be very cold. Dress accordingly.

Venice, like a many parts of North Italy is cold in winter, not so cold like Salzburg however. In Salzburg in december you can find a temperature of 20°F (-6°C). In Venice in december the temperature, during the day, is around 44°F (6°C) or more. So to visit Venice is always a good time. Even if it rains Venice is beautiful.

Perfect. It’s set. We are going! How would you recommend we travel to Venice, train or car? And into Rome? Any lodging recommendations for 6 people besides the traditional 2 hotel rooms.

For me is better by train, beacause in both cities there aren't parking area, the traffic is so much and in Venice, if you go with car, you can arrive only in Mestre, and than is obbligatory to continue with public transport. In Rome, the historic center is pedestrian only. In addition the railway stations are easy to reach and are served by all means.

For lodging in Rome you can search on Booking.com an apartement. There are any price and size, and you can find a good rate also in city center.

Is there a particular area in Venice to look for lodging? You mentioned stay in city center in Rome so I am presently searching there.

In Venice, is better the railway station area, close to the Canal Grande. Avoid the San Marco Square area because it is too expensive.

Although you can drive across the Causeway to Piazzale Roma at the very edge of the city of Venice, paying for expensive parking and not having use of the car till you leave is not the best. Go by train to Venice. From Venice continue by train to Rome.

No cars allowed in Venice and a car in Rome is not advisable since it will be more of a hustle for parking and avoiding zones(ZTL) where you are not allowed to drive. Also ZTL fines are very hefty. Take the train and enjoy your trip.

If you can handle winter in Salzburg you should be fine in Venice as long as you dress for the weather, hats and gloves included.

Apartment for 2 days is a bit hard to find but you may just find one. The link below will give you some ideas of what you may want to see.
