Sicily 14 nights suggestions

Hi All,

We are in the process of planning our trip to Sicily for 14 nights, coming from Rome and leaving to go to Puglia. We are travelling with a baby and hiring a car (from Australia, so used to driving distances).

We enjoy walking, taking in the culture (not overly into churches), wineries and eating, and beaches

We are after any suggested itinerary for 14 nights in Sicily, should be do an entire loop, or fly into Palermo and out of Catania? Best towns to stay and must see sites/activities. Also is it worth going to an island in our time frame?

After reading posts/blogs considering the following, but open to suggestions:

- Catania 2-3 N (mt Etna, Taormina, wine tour)

-Siracusa 3 N (Ortigia, fontane bianche)

- Noto 2N

- Agrigento 2-3 N (valley of the temples, scala dei turchi)

- Palermo 2-3 N (cefalu, mondello, food tour)

TIA

hi....we went to Sicily October 2014 for 15 days and had a great adventure. Hopefully, destination expert Vagabonda will be able to help with her excellent guidance.

Here are some observations to mull over---When is this trip? Sicily will be very hot during summer months/high season and perhaps too hot in August with a baby. I would consider May or October for more pleasant weather and less crowds.

I feel a guidebook will be beneficial at this stage in your planning ..you will find 'must sees', pictures, hidden gems, road trip excursions, city marketplaces, nightlife, UNESCO Heritage sites, ideas for restaurants and lodging, self-guided walking ideas, maps, logistics and the history of where you are and what you are looking at...

Palermo is a significant destination with a lot to see and do--we stayed 3 nights (which is only 2-2.5 days by the time you get there and settle in). We did not take a day trip during our time, except 1/2 day to Monreale (via bus) so if you'd like to visit Cefalu, I would add a night to Palermo.

Noto doesn't require 2 days. Suggest an afternoon (via bus) from Siracuse and be sure to know when last bus leaves Noto. I would stay in Ortigia which is the picturesque old town of Siracuse.

With 14 nights, I would certainly fly in Catania and out Palermo (or vice versa). You may wish to pick up yr rental car when leaving Siracuse to cross the island. And there are restrictions to driving that you should be aware of, as well as know what the ZTL zones mean. One is not allowed to drive into historic city or village centers and parking is highly regulated...and a general precaution is avoid driving in Catania or Palermo. Know that it is ill-advised to leave luggage or personal belongings in the car, not even in the trunk. Always get to lodging first, unload and then go out and explore.

IDEA for 14 days/14 nights, with travel time, optional day trips, 5 hotel changes, fly in Catania/out Palermo:

--arrive Catania 1/2 day

--Catania 2.5 days/3 nights (day trips Taormina, Mt. Etna)

--bus to Siracuse, walk up to Ortigia 1/2 day

--Ortigia 2.5 days/3 nights (afternoon day trip Noto, 2 days Siracuse/Ortigia)

--pick up rental car in Siracuse, drive to Agrigento 1/2 day

--Agrigento 1.5 days/2 nights (Scala dei Turci, temples)

--drive to Erice 1/2 day

--Erice 1.5 days/2 nights

--drive to Palermo Airport, drop off car, take shuttle bus into Palermo 1/2 day

--Palermo 3.5 days/4 nights (day trip Cefalu, 2.5 days Palermo)

--fly out Palermo

You will have a wonderful time....remember 'less is more'.

Welcome to Sicily PiafSteve!

Coming from Rome to where, and departing from where.

First set your flights.

Aussies always think distances don't matter, but this is Sicily, and not Australia.

It's not about distances. It's about road conditions, following farm equipment, getting lost, and underestimated driving time here.

Hire the car outside the cities....

https:/…92553871

Decide your bases, and your destinations first.

Decide between Catania or Taormina as a base for Etna.

Why would you even consider Fontane Bianche if coming from beaches and Australia?

And if you were to day trip there, then from Noto.

Your time in Siracusa is too important.

But then see Vendicari from Noto.

No mention of the Villa Romana del Casale, so perhaps consider the lesser known, and smaller but representative Villa Romana del Tellàro from Noto, and combined with your day at Vendicari.

Too little time in Palermo for Palermo, Mondello, and Cefalù.

Perhaps for Aussies, consider more what Sicily offers that Australia doesn't, and less time on beaches.

An just an aside....

Where you're from; what your home destination offers that your travel destination might (or might not) offer; your prior experiences; your subjectivity for issues like temperatures, or driving distances; your expectations; your interests; these all matter and fact into your consideration for bases and destinations.

Thank you everyone for all your advice and I also really enjoyed reading the trip reports. It is much appreciated, as it can be overwhelming the information.

Thanks also for the tips on destinations for bases, driving, beaches etc.

Based on further research, this is the plan we are considering:

Fly into Palermo from Rome, stay 3N (dont need a car as we are able to do day trips to Monreale and Cefalu. Pick up the car on the day we leave Palermo - do you recommend picking it up from the airport?).

Trapani or Erice (3N) which would you suggest as best base? Day trip to Egadi Island Favignana. I was reading on some of the posts to go to the pier to speak to fisherman for a boat tour, is this the best way to see the island considering we have a baby with us?

Agrigento (1N)

Ortigia or Siracusa (4N); which would you suggest as the best base?

Taormina (3N) - is it best to keep the hire car and drop off at the Catania airport when we depart for Puglia, to give us the option of driving to winery, self drive to Mt Etna (understand can't go all the way up with the baby).

Fly out of Catania for Bari for 6N, then to Amalfi for 4N and Rome for 3N (then leave Italy)

Thanks, Piaf
