Southern-Eastern Sicily without a car? Where to go?

Dear all,

We are thinking about flying to Catania late July to spend 10 days in Sicily. We hope to find some nice towns, good food and beautiful beaches away from the masses (which may be hard in August!). We are planning to stay at 1 or 2 different apartments or agriturismo's and explore from there.

We don't have driver licenses. Do you have advise on nice places to stay? (We now found a nice place in Avola.) And is it possible to get around (safely) by public transport or scooter rental? If so, any ideas on places and prices for scooter rental?

We are a couple in our mid-late twenties with a limited budget, if that matters.

Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure about scooter rentals, but if you want to check out Noto, when we did a otur and lunch at Zisola, only about 2.5km out of Noto, we discovered they also offer homestays. The rooms look lovely, and it might bre worth getting in touch with them to investigate as an option

Welcome to Sicily Anna L!

Agriturismi are located in the countryside, and typically with few exceptions require a car, or a driver.

Your would require a licence for a scooter.

Without a licence you could get a 50cv, and no motorway.

Best / Favourite Agriturismos:

Reconsider agriturismi without a car.

But public transport is safe, inexpensive, reasonably comfortable, and easy to navigate. Trenitalia connects Catania with Avola, if you are set on going there. I would guess there is bus service too, but I will leave that for Vagabonda. But on the whole, much of the South-east is well linked, and Catania is certainly a hub and an excellent starting and/or ending point.

Like so many towns, Avola's train station is located on the outskirts of town, but buses arrive nearer town centres. Interbus would arrive at Piazza Trieste in Avola.

But if your lodging has an Avola address, but is located outside Avola, you would require a car.
