Car rental/ car parking/ ZTL zones

Good evening

We´ll be traveling to Siciliy for the first time, for a round trip through 13 days (a couple and 6yo son).

We´ll arrive at Catania next saturday and will spend 4 nights in Palermo, 3 in Trapani, 1 in Agrigento, 5 in Siracusa and depart again from Catania.

My questions are about car rental/car parking/ZTL zones

We decide to hire a car, but what company do you advise? Usually we book through Rentalcars.com, but the safety issue is important to us... I think I´ve heard Vagabonda advises somewhere in the forum... And as our return flight is at 9:30am we must do car return until 7:30am. Is it a problem, or the offices at the airport we´ll be already open?

Our apartment in Palermo is nearby Teatro Massimo - Piazza del Monte di Pieta - and we´ve heard that traffic is caotic in Palermo. Last year we went to Napoli and get a fine in a a ZTL zone :(

Do you advise to go directly by car to Piazza del Monte di Pieta, or to place the car in some private garage in the neighbourwood? And don´t even enter Palermo, as we´ll visit everything on foot...

And what abour ZTL zones... We pretend to visit Palermo/Trapani/Agrigento/Siracusa/Vale di Noto/Taormina. Are there ZTL in the city center?

Thanks a lot and excellente trips to all

Márcia

Welcome to Sicily MarciaPorto_Portugal!

Consider hiring the car only outside the cities of Catania and Palermo.

https:/…92553871

Begin in Palermo.

Take the direct, frequent, and reliable SAIS Autolinee bus from Aeroporto Catania to Palermo.

After Palermo, then take the bus to the airport, and hire the car at Aeroporto Palermo.

Return the car at Aeroporto Catania prior to taking the bus to Catania.

There are ZTL in all the towns you've indicated.

Comuni websites would have the most updated information.

As you go into each town keep your eyes out for ZTL signs. https://bit.ly/2HAHTux

https:/…dont-mess-with-ztl-zones

In Trapani you can get quite a way into town before encountering them. We stayed near the historic district and parked near the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele: https://goo.gl/maps/HBLk3RAUtQk

In Ortigia (Syracuse) look for parking signs as you cross the bridge entering the island. Drive carefully and follow the signs.

Agrigento we did not go near the ZTL which is in the older district. Just watch the signs carefully. You can also ask for parking information from the places you are staying.

Keep in mind that ZTL regulations change constantly, and that's why it's important to consult comuni websites for updates, but also keep an eye for the ZTL sign as maryann-ns indicated.

Thanks a lot Vagabonda! You're a great help

We´ve contact Auto Europe and secure the super coverage insurance at booking, with Europcar as supplier, as you advised us.

We´ll pick up the car only at day 5 at Palermo airport, drive to Trapani (where we´ll stay in an agroturismo in Paceco, with free car park); then to Agrigento (apartment also near the ruins with freparking) and then to Ortigia, wehere we pretend to use TALETE PARK. Do you advise it? Is nearby our apartment... In the last day go directly from Ortigia to Catania airport, drop the car, for our flight home.

In the last 5 days (placed in Ortigia) we pretend to visit vale di Noto, go to Calamosche beach, visit Etna and Taormina. Should we go always by car, for freedom and as we´re travelling with a 6 year old son? We´ve already printed the ZTL zones map, as you told us. Or should we take the bus/train, in some cases?

Thanks a lot again you all

Just be aware that "free parking" doesn't mean you can freely drive into a ZTL. I don't know where these locations are as they relate to the ZTL but just be sure to check with your lodgings to see if this will be an issue.

Obrigada MarciaPorto_Portugal!

Talete is a public parking station and acceptable, and convenient if near your lodging.

Intend, not pretend....

Enjoy the flexibility of your car hire for your intended day trips.

There's no public transport to Spiaggia Calamosche.

Also no services at Calamosche, so carry in whatever you might need for the day. It's a beautiful natural beach in Vendicari.

You can also drive yourselves to Rifugio Sapienza.

And Taormina.

Perhaps park at Porta Catania. It's expensive, but convenient.

We followed Vagabonda's advice regarding car rental and ZTLs, and had no trouble with either. We also had the app "ZTL Radar" on the phone. It worked with GPS of the phone and set off an alarm whenever we got near a ZTL border. Good luck!
