3 weeks in sicily questions!

3 week itinerary help!

We are arriving in Sicily on Sept 24 and will have 22 days to explore! After reading a lot, we have the following tentative itinerary with some questions:

Fly into PALERMO (arrive very late at night from Rome) and spend 3 nights/2.5 days

TRAPANI/WESTERN SICILY area for 3-4 days

Drive to AGRIGENTO for the temples - stay 1 overnight in the area

Base in MODICA and explore the Val de Noto 5 days

SYRACUSA/ORTIGIA 5 days

So far, this is 17-18 nights.

Here’s where it gets complicated:

We want to explore and hike around Mt. Etna and at this point we will be into the second week of October (weather?). Ideally, Syracusa would be our last spot so that we can give up our rental car when we arrive there and then take public transport to Catania to fly out. How should we incorporate seeing Mt. Etna into this itinerary?

We are interested in exploring some less-traveled, "hidden gems" (Vagabonda, we loved your piece about the hidden gems in the area around Val de Noto) and would like to have more of this than our time basing in Monica. Would you recommend adding some time in central regions? Could this be combined somehow with Mr. Etna?

As we have not bought plane tickets from Rome to Sicily yet, we could reverse this itinerary or change anything according to your feedback. We do wonder if ending in the Southeast would be more relaxing than returning home from Palermo.

Once we get these basics down, we’ll have a few specific questions about the regions we are visiting.

Thanks so much!

Hi ahss,

You can drive to Etna from Siracusa.

Or you could visit Etna via AST bus public transport from Catania.

Or book an excursion from Catania, half-day or full-day.

You have many other hidden gems during your time in Modica.

See Scicli.

Perhaps enjoy a visit and lunch at Gli Aromi.

Enjoy wineries around Vittoria.

And olive oil tasting around Chiaramonte Gulfi.

But you could also add time to Enna or Piazza Armerina, and then see the Villa Romana del Casale, Morgantina, and the museum in Aidone.

Etna is still optimally explored from Catania.

Thank you so much, Vagabonda! After a bit more research, we have a few questions!

1) After 4 nights in Palermo we would like to find a lovely Agriturismo either in the Trapani area to explore W. Sicily or around Agrigento. Do you have some special recommendations? After reading one of your posts, we checked out Mandranova and it looks beautiful but, among many positive reviews, several reviewers say it is very noisy close to the highway. Your opinion? Are there other agriturismo you would recommend in both of these area?

2) After 5 days in Modica (and surrounds) & 5 days in Syracusa, we are thinking of ending our 3 week trip with 2-3 days hiking and exploring around Mt. Etna before flying out of Catania. Can you recommend a lovely agriturismo/winery/rural-type lodging that would give us access to Etna, and be calming, beautiful in itself.

Thank you so much, Vagabonda--you are an amazing wealth of information and generosity!

Prego e grazie ahss,

I have never once heard traffic on the SS115 at Mandranova after multiple visits.

There are thousands of olive trees.

And it's a lovely olive oil producing agriturismo.

But then consider Ciuci's Manor.

Deep in the countryside, you will surely will not hear traffic.

https:/…

Consider Murgo at Santa Veneria.

Thank you, Vagabonda! We also were thinking that Murgo (Tenuta San Michele is the same place? that was where your link went) near Mt. Etna would be a good choice so it's great to have your collaboration!

After debating, we are looking for an Agriturismo for 3 nights in the Erice/Trapani/Western area instead of near Agrigento. What would you recommend in that area that would be accessible to visiting Erice, good food and a lovely country setting? Agriturismo Don Carlo came up but we're uncertain about it. Would love your thoughts and are so grateful for your time.
