Is early October too late to go up the Jungfrau?

Hi,

we are family of 5 ,kids 10,11,11.

My husband and I went to Lauterbrunnen in May 2009 and loved it , we didn't go up the Jungfrau, saving it, as wanted to take the kids.

Our current trip plans have us in Switzerland approx October 2nd to 6th......have just realised that the weather maynot be suitable for

going up the mountain...... Any advise?

Or shouild we wait for another time?

On the contrary, early October is often a time of clear, sunny days in Switzerland. You probably have a better chance of stable, clear weather in October than in high summer, although of course the temperatures will be lower.

we were in Grindelwald last year on just about the same dates that you plan for this year. The weather was wonderful - sunny, warm days and cool evenings. We didn't go up tot he Jungfraujoch because we have done that several times before. But it was an option and would have been great!

We hiked in shirtsleeves, and were glad to have warm jackets at night...just 10 days later snow fell and we could not have done what we did!!

Be sure to take your children to Ballenberg. It is really worth the trip. www.ballenberg.ch You can take a picnic there and even grill your sausages over fires - they provide wood and kindling!

Here's a link for things to do with children in the region:

www.interlaken.ch/erlebnisse/familien.html…

The special boat trips are always fun.

Don't miss going up to First. If you are basing in Lauterbrunnen, take the train to Grindelwald, walk through the village, then catch the gondola up to First. It's a nice short and scenic hike out to the Bachalpsee (a small lake) and marmots are occasionally spotted along the way. Then, return to First, take the gondola down to the Bort stop, and ride the Trottibikes back down to Grindelwald. grindelwald.travel/de.cfm/sommer/offer-Somme… Or, if you are feeling particularly adventurous, try the ziplines before you leave First.

Just a couple of ideas.

That sounds great, will pray for fine weather.

Ziplines sound fun , we did our first one in January at The Otway near The Great Ocean Road, Victoria Australia.

Will there be good views of snow peaks in first week of October from Interlaken or other cities in Switzerland?

From the Interlaken West station you can see the Jungfrau - somewhat - and it is always snow covered. But this depends on the weather on the day itself, as if there is cloud or fog etc you see nothing. Other cities with views on good days are:

Zürich - mountains to the southeast near the Wallensee

Bern - Jungfrau massif - really great views on clear day from the terrace of the Palais Fédéral

Lausanne - occasional views of the Mt Blanc

Montreux - great views of the Dents du Midi

Geneva - on a clear day, stunning views of the Mt Blanc from the Place des Nations near the UN.

All of the above mountains have at least some permanent snow cover. Dents du Midi are the lowest but there is a small glacier up there... others - Jungfrau, Mt Blanc - are always snow covered.
