Geneva rental car, airport and train station info needed!

In July, my family is flying from Vienna to Geneva (presumably arriving on international side), renting a car (not sure what company), driving to chalet in French alps, then returning car a week later, to then take train (TGV Lyria) from Geneva Cornavin (also Geneve CFF, I gather) station to Paris. Where is the train station in relation to the airport and how long to allow to get from returning car rental to getting on train?

Thanks for any and all info!

Geneva airport doesn't have an "international side". A flight from Vienna will arrive in the Schengen area. There'll not be any passport check, but there will be customs after you collect bags.

Geneva has two larger train stations that concern you.

Geneva airport station is situated (not surprisingly) at the airport, which is apparently where you're renting your car.

Geneva main station (Cornavin) is in town about 6 km away and is the station you're taking the train to Paris from.

You need to know where you're collecting your car from. If from a rental company on the Swiss side, they're all situated a short shuttle ride away from the terminal (in P51). You'll take the shuttle to collect the car and on return leave the car there, take the shuttle back to the terminal, go into the airport station and take a train from the airport station to the main station. The ride takes 6 minutes and there 4-5 trains/hour. The cost is 3 CHF.

If your car-rental is from the French side, on arrival in Geneva, once you've collected your bags, go through customs (Swiss), then go up one level to departures, follow the signs for the French sector, go through French customs (usually invisible) and collect your car from the French sector. As you drive out, note where you come out of the airport access road, it will help you on your return, as it isn't obvious. On the return, deposit the car in the French sector. Do not deposit in the Swiss sector to avoid massive one-way deposit charges. Things may get tricky here, as officially the passage between the French and Swiss sectors is only for air travellers. If you can get through, follow the instructions I gave for Swiss arrivals to go to the airport station. If you can't get through, you're a bit stuck as there's no public transport on the French side. You'll have to call a taxi (there are phones in the French sector, by the car-park) and either get the taxi to drive you to Geneva main station, or to the Swiss sector and the airport station.

In your case it is best to rent the car on the Swiss side of the airport. Which is where you will arrive - read catmouse's post above. If you rent it on the French side you have to return it on the French side which is complicated AND means you have then to drive to the airport, drop the car, cross to the Swiss side and take the train into town to get your TGV.

Most of the rental companies have outlets around the main station - Genève Cornavin or CFF. Drop the bags at the station and then drop the car. Walk back to the station. Just be sure to set this up in advance on the rental company's website.
