What exactly are your plans? There may be cheaper options than the standard 2nd class ticket for 170.40 CHF which can also be of benefit during your stay in Grindelwald.

Look at getting some form of pass. The 1 month Half Fare Card will cost 120 CHF and save you 50% on all your travel. With this you could buy cheap Saver Day Passes for your transfers. The earlier you buy the cheaper they are.

There is typically no need to buy any train tickets in advance. Same applies to the full or 1/2 pass. You can buy it on the spot at the station and use it right away. If not using a pass, the SBB agents typically are very good at optimizing your day's travel plan.

If you are traveling one of the scenic routes, then you might want to pay extra for a reservation to guarantee a seat.

Since the introduction of the Saver Day Pass there can be substantial savings made by buying in advance. For short distance, local and mountain transport then buy on the day.
