Half day tour of Flanders Fields from Brugge

Would it be possible to take a half day tour of Flanders Fields from Brugge? Can you recommend a tour operator, highlights to see , public transportation to area from Brugge. Or should we rent a car for the day?

It is quite possible to take your tour by public transport from Bruge ! please consider the following information ..................

Bruge to leper by Train leaving at around 9-30 , takes approx 1.1/2 hours with a change at Kortrijk so arrive in leper around 11am , visit the main square and have a light lunch at the many cafe`s in leper.

Take an afternoon battlefield tour , many available , we reccomend Flanders Battlefield Tours run by Jaques and Genevra , but whoever you choose please book in advance .

At the end of your tour you have 2 choices really , 1) catch the train back to Bruges and enjoy your evening or 2) have a evening meal in leper and then go to the Last Post ceremoney at the Menin Gate at 8pm , this last around 20-30 minutes on average depending on whether wreaths are to be laid or not , 10-15 minute walk to the Train station and catch the Last train to Bruges at around 9-30pm ( check train times when you arrive in leper in morning )

Back into Bruges around 11.30 pm , enjoy a late drink or two !

It`s a full day but well worth it !

Hope this helps !

If watching the Last Post ceremony, do be aware that the last train that has a direct connection from Kortrijk to Brugge is at 20:39.

There is a later train at 21:39, but to get to Brugge you will have to change additionally at Gent St Pieters as well as Kortrijk. When asking for a ticket from Brugge to Ieper, make sure that it is valid for the return journey via Gent, otherwise you will be liable to a fine.

It also depends on exactly what you mean by "Flanders Fields". The "In Flanders Fields" Museum is in Ieper itself, so easy to visit on your own taking train to Ieper. There are various battlefields and cemeteries in the area, including the Flanders Field American Cemetery (near Waregem), which is where the Canadian poet John McCrae, author of the well-known poem, is buried. But you may be using this as a generic term for all WWI sites.

WWI battlefield and cemetery tours from Brugge are generally full-day, I thought Quasimodo also did half-day tours, but can't find one on here: http://www.quasimodo.be/index.php/bus-trips - possibly you could arrange to leave in the morning with them and then go back to Brugge on your own at lunch-time, or travel to Ieper on your own and join only for the afternoon.

An alternative way to get back to Brugge from the Last Post ceremony is to take De Lijn bus no. 94 from the stop at Ieper Markt to the station at Roeselare.

There are buses at 20:25 and 21:30 which take 30 mins to get to Roeselare. There is a connecting train at Roeselare for Brugge at 06 minutes past the hour which arrives in Brugge at 28 minutes past the hour. So the total journey time from Ieper to Brugge is about one hour, considerably less than taking the train via Kortrijk.
