Hi all.
We are staying at Martinhal in Sagres for a week in June. My 4 year old has a massive cat phobia. Does anyone know if cats are a problem at Martinhal? Thank you
Just as a postscript, the following article about a study using GPS to track the range or average English moggies was published on the BBC website:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-22567526
Applying the largest range of 220m in the BBC study sample to a map of Martinhal, (Google maps), shows that quite an area of the Martinhal complex is with less than 200m of the surrounding brush. (i.e. within possible feral cat range)
Of course, this excludes a domestic moggies who may live in any of the villas at Martinhal and which may also range.
Problem is probably too strong a word perhaps, but it's obviously a common issue. My own moggy spent two months in the wild and wilderness of Wolverhampton before I caught her.
However, I agree that there really isn't an answer. Unless you try to feed them they should keep a safe distance. It's just impossible to guarantee that you won't encounter them.
In Algarve, wherever you go, you will always find one or more cats
No there is no problem with cats in Sagres. They are very friendly. It is hard to see them. I just came back from Sagres few days ago. I have seen them in port. I agree with someone above, try to stop phobia. Kids must have contact with animals ,it is good for their mental health. I love cats,
I also have a real serious phobia of cats and it really annoys me that people make such flippant remarks. The terror of seeing cats roaming around is indescribable. People who do not suffer from this phobia should have more compassion. Vilamora in Portugal did not have too many cats, only saw 5 in 6 days but I did have to lock myself in a really posh shop, don't think the owner was too amused but she phoned a neighbouring shop and the man removed the cat from outside the door so I could leave the shop I was in.
