Furnas cooking

I'll be in Sao Miguel in a few days time and I am keen to try and hard boil an egg in the hot volcanic ground (something my godmother did years ago). Is this still possible? I'm not that interested in a big roast dinner being put into the ground by someone else (I did that years ago in New Zealand). I'd like to try and do it myself… Is this an option and if so, where should I go?

According to my local contact, there are two places:

Caldeiras Ribeira grande and Lagoa das Furnas.

You can put in your own food. A stew for example takes 6 hours too cook.

Thank you so much, that's really helpful. I only want to boil an egg. What kind of basket/implement should I use to put the egg in the hole/boiling water?

No container is needed, you need to get a string and create a support for your egg so you can lower it in and fish it out. Basically you need to build a primitive mesh. So you would need to practice. I have no idea how long would it take so I suggest to get three eggs and remove one after let us say 2 hours, another 3 and another - 4 to make sure. It is a very slow steam cooking.

Good luck!
