Creepy Crawlies in Greece?

I'm nervous about the following:

- Scorpions

- Tarantulas

- Any kind of gross spiders

- Rats

- Roaches

- Poisonous snakes

- Big bugs like millipedes and centipedes

(Can you tell I live in Canada?)

Are any of these an issue in Greece? I don't want to have to check my bed every night! eeeeeeeeee gross!!!

Cross the tarantulas off the list and enjoy everything else.

Have never seen any of these over many many trips, hough I am sure they are there somewhere.

Wasps are the main nuisance I have encountered. And big ants (only outdoors).

I have seen some spiders webs, big funnel type webs, that look like they might have pretty scary looking spiders in them, but never gone poking about to see whats in there, as I dont like spiders either! :-)

Being a little more serious, a lot depends on where you're going and what sort of holiday you are having.

The vast majority of holiday makers are unlikely to come across anything worse than stinging insects as already mentioned; it is possible that there's the occasional viper lurking in some archaeological ruins but they are timid by nature; we see snakes most years but we do get off the 'beaten track'.

Hi L E

Don't worry at all about anything like this - Greece does have a population of scorpions, snakes, etc but they will keep well out of your way. As far as I'm aware, there is just one species of poisonous snake in Greece and these aren't fatal to humans anyway.

All I would say is that if you are hiking in open country and you come to a stone wall that you need to cross, just watch out for reptiles that may be sunning themselves, especially in mid morning when the sun is warming up. You'll probably see nothing more than a few harmless small lizards.

I'll resist the urge to check my bed for scorpions!
