Fishermen Origins

Over the years I have observed various fishing boats around Greece that are owned by Greek people but are worked on and run by Muslim fishermen, who seem to eat, pray and in some cases sleep on board the boats. There seems to be very little interaction with these men from local people.

The men don't appear to have family with them and live together/work together all the time - rarely in a coffee bar or local eatery.

Does anyone have any info about such groups of hardworking people who put delicious fish on our plates? Are they Greek ?

Just to clarify they are people who I have seen over a few years and not from recent migrations.

I have spoke with these men in Vlychada(Santorini) mending the fishing nets. They are from Bangladesh and work very hard doing the jobs the Greeks used to do. They earn very little money I gave one 10Euro to go and have a few drinks. He didn't want to take it but I said please have a drink on me. They work to send the money home to their families. I also had long chats with them at Sandy's apts in Perissa as they were employed as her cleaners and our cleaner showed us pics of his family back home. They all slept in one underground room with beds all the way on virtually next to each other. We could see this through a window.

Thank you to both of you.

they all seem to work such long hours and it seems very hard work.

The owners of the boats I have seen the men working on are all owned by Greeks - they come and check up on the workers before the boats go out.
