Getting from Piraeus to Athens

We're stopping here on a cruise and I'm trying to decide if I should book an excursion with the cruise line or do it on our own. How easy is it to get to/from Piraeus-Athens? This is our first trip to Athens and obviously we want to see the Parthenon. Ships tour is $115pp and has 3hrs of on your own and the rest guided tours around the city and the Acropolis.

Before deciding which will work best for you, can you tell us the exact hours in port, arrival & reboarding time?

Often it’s better on your own, although it does depend on what you want to see, if you’ve read up on anything etc. It gives you the freedom to spend the length of time you want at any places you want to see.

We are in port from 12 noon until 8:30pm. We have never been to Greece. I do have two DK Eyewitness Books on Greece and we have done England on our own before. We want to see the Parthenon, but aside from that, I think we just want to explore Athens. We don't have an interest in the Olympic Stadiums.Thank you for your help and any advice. I guess we're most concerned about getting to and from the ship, and spending as much quality time as possible in Athens as first time travelers.

You can use the X80 bus express bus, runs from the cruise port to the centre, €4.50 a ticket for 24hrs.

You might find some of these comments helpful, descriptions & photos from people who’ve used the service. Although they’re from 2014 it’s still valid info apart from the price :)

Do not go to the Acropolis as soon as you get to the centre, it will be hot & very crowded, do some of your other wandering, have lunch etc, maybe visit the Acropolis museum first, then head for the Acropolis about 5-5.30 when it will be less hot & busy :)

We caught the X80 into Athens but had to wait nearly half hour at an open bus stop in the heat. When the bus arrived there were so many people waiting it was full and a pretty uncomfortable ride especially for the people standing. The a/c didn’t cope very well with that many people so by the time we got to Athens the whole bus was a sweating mess.

On the way back we opted for the metro train and found it much easier than the X80. The Piraeus metro station is a 10 minute walk from the pier and the train comes every 5-10 minutes. You get off at Monastiraki station in Athens (about 7 stops) which is about a 1 km walk to the Acropolis. The same 24 hour ticket can be used on the bus or train and costs €4.50 for an adult. There is an X80 ticket booth near the pier exit, past all the taxis on the left hand side. Alternatively you can buy a ticket at the train station.

We went into Athens around 12.30 and returned at 6.30.
