Holiday advice: what are the greek islands like in october?

We are looking for a family Holiday (2 small children in party) in mid to late October but we are worried that the resorts on the Greek Islands will be closing as we presume its towards the end of the tourist season, can any one advise us on this please

There will still be stuff open, many places don't close down until end October, but it depends very much what island, for example Rhodes will keep going longer than some off the beaten track little island. The weather I find a bit of a gamble mid October onwards.

You'll do best to be looking as southerly as possible, Rhodes & Crete being the two obvious choices, perhaps even the very far south coast of Crete though I"ve had a good holiday middle two weeks of Oct on the north side, with just a couple of rain storms which luckily were overnight, though the sea did get stirred up by the storms and after that it was *noticeably* colder even though it was low 80's on land.

Cephalonia, Zante, as examples of more northerly islands, are likely to be past end of season *especially* as far as the weather is concerned and with small kids, bearing in mind swimming pools and sea likely to be cold, probably should be missed.

If you want more of a guarantee, then Canary Islands is the place to be looking.

You might consider the southern Peloponnese , British charters keep flying into Kalamata, from Gatwick and Manchester until the end of October; so I presume there would be packages to Stoupa. If you're traveling independently there would still be accommodation in Chrani and Finikunda as well as nearby villas.

The sea is pleasantly warm in October, but there is always a chance of rain.

We stayed in Koutouloufari (Hersonissos) 2-9th October 2009 and the weather was exceptionally lovely for the time of year, we were told. We had stayed 7 years previous, also the first week of October and again, the weather was good if a little breezy.

The resorts were far from shut-down, everything was still open but because of the economic climate and the horrendous exchange rate, very quiet. We had a fabulous time. Please support the Greek tourist industry, eat in the tavernas and drink in the bars. Children are welcome everywhere and there is tons for them to do.

As with anywhere, good weather cannot be guaranteed. Friends have just returned from Florida and they had frost and the coldest January for 40 years!

Karen.

Hi have stayed in Rhodes in October, the bigger resorts were still up and running. Stayed in Kos last October, everything in Kos Town was still open. Went to Kefalos one day and nearly everything was closed. The weather was lovely both holidays. Went to Crete one October, windy and rainy. Hope that helps.

Hi there

Officially the season doesnt finish in Crete until the 31st October, so everywhere will still be open.

It is very difficult to predict what the weather will be like, but I have been to Crete the first week in October for the last two years and the weather has been lovely 25 - 30 during the day and even 20 - 25 at night. But I think you do need to be prepared that you might get a couple of cloudy days and it could be a bit chilly at night. Hope that helps a bit with your decision

I usually go to Naxos in October, and mostly find it warm and nice. The most touristic areas are closing down, but the beaches are fine for swimming and close to town you will find that itr is very much alive - catering for its locals all year around.

Crete & Rhoudes are longer than other islands, the weather around october there is abit chilly though.

but in such period, I would agree to Joe about the canary islands
