First Greece Trip September 2019

Wanted to get opinions/ideas on what we are thinking for my wife and I. We love the history aspect but love the beach even more.

Looking at 12 Night trip with Athens (3), Santorini (3), and Naxos (6) from the US

Possibly staying at New Hotel/Athens, Astra Suites/Santorini, and Villa Marandi/Naxos

Suggestions on number of nights? The order of stops? Experiences at these resorts?

Should we see Mykanos?

Best way to get around at each location?

Any other useful information would be appreciated

We were in Greece this September and are heading back next September as well . We stayed at Agios Prokopios in Naxos which was incredible . We stayed at Hotel Katerina which was lovely . The beach here is brilliant and a short bus ride to Naxos Town where we went a couple of days. In my opinion Santorini is very busy and the beaches there are not nice . We are heading to Naxos for 12 nights next year . If you have any other questions please let me know

Sounds like a great trip. At the advice of experts here, we flew immediately out to Santorini, ferried to Naxos, then flew back to Athens for our final few nights. In Naxos we stayed at the top floor apartment at Hotel Kymata, reasonably priced with beautiful views. If you want to see Mykonos, we did a day trip from Naxos that went to Delos and Mykonos - they usually run every other day so just check once you get to the island to see when works for you. We rented a car one day for an easy and wonderful day road trip to some of the hill towns and a small fishing village. With 6 nights you will have time to do a lot more! We are going back for 5 nights in September 2019 too. Enjoy!

Oh, in Athens we stayed at Hermès Hotel, it is a sister property of Plaka Hotel where you are allowed to used their rooftop patio which has perfect views for watching the sunset on the Acropolis with an Aperol Spritz in your hand.

Yes, that is a good itinerary for a first trip to Greece.

Santorini is still a "must see" although it will be busy and your allocation of 3 nights is probably about right.

Advice for Naxos is usually to stay in town but we opted for a beach location at Agia Anna which was the best choice for us.

The beaches of Agios Prokopios/Aga Anna & Plaka are fantastic and run into each other so anywhere nearby is great for a beach based holiday.

There are sufficient restaurants in each area and you can walk anywhere quite easily. There is also a very good regular bus service that runs through until the early hours. We went into Naxos town several times at night to eat and there was no problem getting there and back by bus. You can also get around the island by bus.

It will be a complete contrast to Santorini and most people who visit Naxos love it.

I would keep Athens for the end of your trip and, as suggested by @Melissa-Brad2015, and fly directly to Santorini upon arrival at Athens Airport. Then ferry back to Naxos and from there to Athens (Piraeus). By keeping Athens for the end it guarantees you also of being already in close proximity of the airport for your flight back. It will save you a lot of stress if you don't have to fear you won't make it from the islands by unforeseen circumstances like ferry cancellations due to bad weather or maybe a sudden strike.

Be aware that Villa Marandi is situaded in Stelida which is some distance off the main road and where the bus to town doesn't pass. Maybe you should look for accommodation in either Ag. Georgios, Ag. Prokopios, Ag. Anna or even Plaka rather than Stelida.

With just 12 nights I wouldn't bother about going to Mykonos too. Don't forget that moving from one island to the other also takes time with packing/unpacking, checking in/out of accommodation, transport to/from the port, waiting for the ferry and the trip itself. Even with islands rather close to each other it can easily take 1/2 day.

I like your itinerary, it’s nice to do the frantic stuff first and then unwind on Naxos.

On a first visit to the island I would stay in the St George’s Beach area which consists mostly of charming little flower-filled streets on the edge of Naxos town.

You don’t say when you are planning your trip? A good idea to fly straight out to Santorini on arrival, spend a maximum of 3 nights there (your hotel choice looks great) and then take the ferry to Naxos for 6 nights, and spend your last 3 nights in Athens (New Hotel also looks good with rooftop bar and views of the Acropolis).

Villa Marinda is not a long way from the road - its down a dirt road which goes to its own private beach which, although rocky where the sunbeds and parasols are for clients, does have a sandy part. Its North facing and can be windy but has the most amazing views to Chora and the port, with the many ferries passing by. Its only 10 euros by taxi into town but most guests hire a car which gives much more choice of the beautiful beaches over the headland on the more sheltered west facing coast, Ag Prokopios, Ag Anna, Plaka and beyond. We have stayed at Villa Marandi 8 times (twice in 2016 & 2017) and it is a truly great place. The reviews do not exaggerate, believe me! This year we stayed twice at the Iria Beach Art Hotel in Agia Anna and loved being right on the beach by the small port. We had a huge top floor suite with superb views across to Paros and the gorgeous sunsets. The bus stops nearby and runs half-hourly to Naxos town or to Plaka in the other direction. We used to stay in the St George’s area of town, many years ago, but its too busy now and is increasingly commercialised. Recommend you fly back to Athens on Aegean/Olympic Airways - the tiny airport is quite near Stelida but not at all noisey. The three Junior Honeymoon Suites have the best view to Chora and are very privately situated on the upper floor.

Steve, have to agree with Nicksy . Santorini, Naxos ,Then back to Athens is the way to go. We have been to these destinations multiple times . Santorini is a must see, but 3 days is sufficient. loved everything about Naxos. our favorite greek island. We took a day trip to Mykonos . we were underwhelmed..If you are interested in historical sites Delos is a must. Just noticed you are in St Louis so are we.

One more vote for Villa Marandi - we stayed there in ‘16 and are returning in May. Rent a car to explore the villages and have freedom with your schedule.

Leaving Athens last is great advice. Ferry between Santorini and Naxos is easy and fun. Buses will get you to most places in Santorini.

Have a great time!
