Travel to Iceland in July - 2 adults and 2 kids

Hi,

We are thinking of travelling to Iceland this July 2018(5-7 days trip). If you could provide insights below that would help us planning since we have a very short duration to plan and book....

1. Top 4-5 places to visit in Iceland in their order of priority - also if there is some variety in those places that are slightly different from each other would prefer that

2. Best places to look for accommodation. We are open to switching between places for accommodation if that would help visiting places instead of having to stay in same spot everyday

3. Recommendations on tours that needs to be done with local tour operators and places that we can self drive

4. Is car rental a must?

5. Appropriate clothing for july? - winter clothing?summer clothing?

6. Any vegeterian food options available there?

Your main challenge may be finding accommodation and you should do that as soon as possible.

This could be a sample itinerary:

Arrival day: Reykjavík, maybe geothermal pool, Whales of Iceland, petting zoo with the kids

Day 1: Golden Circle with Slakki petting zoo and Efsti-Dalur ice cream farm, stay somewhere around Hella

Day 2: South Coast sights, stay anywhere you can find accommodation between Vík and Jökulsárlón (this may be difficult at this late point)

Day 3: Skaftafell, Jökulsárlón iceberg lagoon, maybe puffin tractor tour at Ingólfshöfði, stay around Hvolsvöllur

Day 4: Westman Islands by ferry

Day 5: Reykjanes Peninsula, stay close to the airport

If you can extend for two more days you could drive the Snæfellsnes Peninsula as well

The best places for accommodation will be the ones you can find at this point that work for your needs and your budget.

Tours and activities will depend on your interests, the age of your children and where you can find accommodation.

A car rental will save you money in the summer. You could do tours, but if your children are small, that might be tough on them, since tours are on a fixed schedule and often long. Private tours could be an option if it works for your budget.

Bring long-sleeve baselayers, a fleece or wool midlayer and wind- and waterproof outer layers (top and bottom) as well as waterproof boots or shoes with good tread. Also bring a light hat and gloves. There may be days when you can get by in a short-sleeved t-shirt, but I wouldn't count on that.

There are vegetarian options, but outside of Reykjavík there may not be many choices at the restaurants. Maybe also look into booking a cottage or airbnb or staying at a guesthouse where you can self-cater. the least expensive grocery stores are Bónus and Krónan.

You are far too late in planning a July trip - start booking accommodations now and worry about the small stuff like vegetarian options once you get a place to stay.

Do come back and let us know what you found for lodgings.
