Advice needed on itinerary

Hi guys

Would appreciate if you could advise on the following itinerary, we are a family of 3 travelling in late Nov/early Dec visiting Austria and Germany

Day 1:

Arrive around 11.30am

Taking it easy for the day due to long travelling.

Would like to visit Christmas markets: Maria Theresien Platz Christmas Markets or Karlsplatz Christmas Markets (which one should I go if only have time for one or to do both)?

Day 2:

St. Stephen's Cathedral

Schonbrunn Palace

Schonbrunn Christmas Markets

Is the 2nd day itinerary too lax, or do we have time for any nearby attractions to the 2 places we will be visiting for the day that is worth a look too?

Day 3:

Historic Center starting with St. Stephan's Cathedral going then to Hofburg and ending to Rathaus

• Opera House

• Hofburg

Parliament Building

• Town Hall

Day 3:

Depart for SLZ in the morning via train

The Original Sound of Music Tour in Salzburg (is it worth it to do this tour in the pm?)

Walkabout in Salzburger Altstadt

Salzburg Christmas market

Day 4:

Fortress Hohensalzburg

Mozart's Geburtshaus

Is day 4 itinerary too lax?

Is the flow of itinerary ok? Also appreciate recommendations for accommodations too. Our mode of transport is mainly public transport.

Thank you in advance for any help rendered

Where will you be staying? Depending on the location, you could see some sights you have planned for day 3 on day 1 on your way to the Christmas market.

Day 2: Depends on how much you plan to see. Will you take a tour in Schönbrunn palace? There is also nearby Schönbrunn zoo, the oldest zoo that still operates, and a very good one to boot.

Day 3 seems rather empty. Do you plan to take a tour in any of those buildings or just view them from the outside? If the latter, you have planned a 2-hour-stroll for that day, plus the Naschmarkt. Most of the buildings you mention offer tours, though I am unsure how interesting a tour of the opera or the Burgtheater might be.

Of course, there are some prime sights you do not have on your itinerary, such as the Kunsthistorisches Museum (one of the world's premier art museums) or the Belvedere with the famous Klimt paintings.

I agree with Stefan – where are you going to stay makes a big difference. How willing you are to walk?

Close to the major markets and Inner City highlights would be hotels in districts 1040, 1050, 1060, 1070, 1080 – target 4*, don’t go lower than modern 3* and look out for deals at “suffering” 5* like De France, Kempinski, The Ring.

If you think about your Salzburg extension it could be useful to stay around “Hauptbahnhof” (1100) or along U1.

It will be cold and dark by 4:30 – so, plan your evenings.

You want to see the “Big 5”: Cathedral; Hofburg & monumental Ring; Belvedere Palaces; Schoenbrunn Palace; Ferris Wheel.

The best/most Viennese Museums are: KHM (Fine Art Museum); Upper Belvedere; HGM (Military History Museum)

Best Markets are: Karlsplatz; Am Hof & Freyung; Rathausplatz – and Maria Thersiaplatz in conjunction with KHM.

Plan some indoor sightseeing for the afternoons.

Retail shops are closed on Sundays.

With 2 ½ days in Vienna you could do much more than listed.

You Salzburg ad on is a nice one – and yes, you should stay overnight and may be get tickets for a concert of Christmas Chorals.

Thanks Stefan M, we hvnt decided on our accommodation places yet.

What are the sights that I can visit for day 3 on day 1? Be going during winter time so the day light is rather short, would any places enroute be too dark to visit?

Yes will be spending time in the Schönbrunn palace. Zoo is not our cup of tea so unlikely to visit. Any other places of interest to recommend, can be any places between the St. Stephen's Cathedral and the Palace.

As for Day 3, most of them will be touring the inside as well unless you suggest it not really worth the trip. I did research on places to visit but mostly recommends what is stated in my itinerary...hope to hear more from experts here.

Will research more on the other places that you recommend, any suggestions that I slot them in any earlier days?

Thank you once again

Which of the sights you mentioned for day 3 can you visit on your way from your accomodation to a Christmas market? That depends on the relative locations of the former and the latter. Not answerable until you have decided where to stay. The major buildings along the Ringstraße are illuminated when night falls, so no problem there.

Re touring the insides of the opera, the parliament, the Burgtheater and the town hall: All those were built at the end of the 19th century. I would do two tours at most. Fun fact: Town hall has one of the last remaining paternoster elevators - take the entrance from Lederergasse and turn right.

So save some time on those Ringstraße buildings and rather see the inside of the Kunsthistorisches (also on Ringstraße) and/or Belvedere instead.

Day 1

For day 1 your start at Karlsplatz is a good idea.

Better, start with snack-lunch at Naschmarkt, then do Karlsplatz, walk past the Opera down to St. Stephens (little market there too, Mozart house at the rear). If the lights are on at Graben, you have a highlight right there.

All those places line up on U1!

Day 2

Sart from Opera (U1 Kalsplatz) and do the courts of Hofburg Palace – outside only one good hour – if you add State Hall of National Library and Treasury plus Café Central its 3 hrs.

Then do the upscale neighborhood of Kohlmarkt, Am Hof, Freyung, Ferstl Passage . . . ending up at City Hall (biggest Market) . . . them via Parliament (under restoration, nothing to see) to Maria Theresiaplatz. Do the Market and enjoy The KHM (KustHis. Museum).

Day 3

Go up to Upper Belvedere, see the “Kiss” or just enjoy the view.

Then take S-bahn to Praterstern/to Prater and take your must picture of the Ferris Wheel (little market opens at 11:00) – then on To Hundertwasserhaus and then from Landstrasse by U4 to Schoenbrunn. Do the carriage Museum and the Palace (if you have to) – then have fun at the market there.

This way you did all the 5 musts plus some extras – time well spent I would say – challenging but possible!
