Travel between Inari/Saariselka and Kirkenes January 2019

Hi there,

We are looking at taking one of the Hurtigruten ships from Kirkene to Bergen mid January. Prior to this we would like to spend some time in Finnish Lapland.

I have seen a number of people suggest a visit to Saariselka rather than places like Rovaniemi. We are looking for somewhere to experience Finnish lapland culture and its nature rather than anything commercialised. My Husband and I are not big city people and we aren't interested in parties/ night clubbing etc. We are also interested in Fat-Biking and sledding.

Could anyone offer advice on how to get to Kirkenes from Saariselka/Inari in Winter (January 2019)?

I have seen one bus company that appears to do the trip in winter, however it sounds very expensive at 4550NOK (around $750-800AU one way) and I am not certain whether this is the price per person or for a group of up to 4 people......however maybe this is standard pricing in Norway/Finland/ Lapland.

All suggestions and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much.

Emma

It is either the offer from Pasvikturist or public tranport. There are Finnish buses into Karasjok, from there you would need transport to Lakselv for a flight to Kirkenes or transfer to local buses. The travel will take a couple of days. Perhaps consider boarding Hurtigruten further south. I think there are flights from Oulu to Tromsø.

No flights from Tromso to Oulo anymore. The company behind the route (Arctic Airlink) used the Swedish airline NextJet to fly - this airline has recently gone bust so the flights are off

Thank you "klimaflyktning" and "WhiskyTraveller".

I will have to investigate if we can board at different ports. From the information I have been given to date, as a package you either board at Kirkenes or Bergen and then you have the choice of one way travel or taking the return journey.

So many airlines seem to being going bust these days. We have just had another one go bust over here in Australia too.

Are we crazy wanting to visit Finnish Lapland, or is it definitely worth a visit? Sounds like if we do decide to do what we are planning - Pasvikturist is the better option because it is only a couple of hours for transport rather than a couple of days.

Cheers

Emma

It would be much less complicated to stick to Norway rather than venturing into Finland. There are quite a few dog sledding options around North-Norway, Kirkenes area included. For a Norwegian, the Finnish scenery will stand out as dull to very dull, but they are more commercialised and been better at marketing.

Thank you! Would we be better getting on and off the ship and staying at different locations along the coast for a couple of days?

I gather there will only be a few hours of light in early January as the sun I believe doesn't come back until mid January. Are we silly planning a trip at this time of year? Are there many tourists around this time of year? Are the locals inviting and friendly - We love to get to know locals and their culture rather than just doing touristy things. People are amazing and you can always learn so much from others when you share stories over a cup of coffee or a meal

Our thought process is that we are able to get 3 weeks leave in January, but at other times of the year we can only get around 10-12 days including travel from Australia as I am a teacher and I can't take holidays during term time.

Locals are friendly enough, but not very outgoing. And it is a time of year when we tend to spend a lot of time indoors.
