bergen vs oslo if you're also going on an arctic cruise

I'm considering taking an arctic cruise at the end of this month (yes, it's a little nuts and i have to decide in the next couple of hours, if the cabin is still available.) I'm considering arriving in Norway about 2 days ahead of flying up to Svalbard, and am trying to pick between Bergen and Oslo. Can people comment on this: Given that I will be spending almost two weeks in arctic Norway, would you recommend Bergen or Oslo? thank you!

Svalbard is in any case very different from Oslo and Bergen. And I Guess that you anyhow will fly from Oslo to Tromsø and Longyearbyen

yes, there doesn't seem to be any way to get to Svalbard without going thru Oslo... but i can just spend an hour in the airport or i can spend 2 days in the city. I'm asking which one, but perhaps you're saying that they are both so different from Svalbard, that it is just the more usual question of Bergen or Oslo?

It's very difficult to advise without knowing about your own interests, so maybe read a bit about both cities and see what catches your attention. Bergen is smaller, has more character as a town and has easy access to the great outdoors. Oslo is the capital city, less atmospheric maybe but with a lot of cultural interests (many museums on quite a large range of artistic and/or cultural topics). For convenience of transport I would probably stay in Oslo, but that may not be what suits you.

No doubt; Bergen! http://visitbergen.com

There’s flights from Tromsø to Longyearbyen, and from Bergen you can fly directly to Tromsø with http://wideroe.no
