Oslo to Lillestrom, commute for a conference

Hi, Heading to Lillestrom for a conference in June. Is it practical to stay in Oslo and take a train/tram in each day? Any idea of the costs or things to be aware of? Thanks, Sue

Lillestrøm is on the line between the airport and downtown Oslo.

Transport prices have gone up - costs NOK 57 now each way, but that ticket is good for transfer so will get you from anywhere in Oslo to the station too.

Very practical - a lot of people commute that - and far better to stay in Oslo. If you are there more than 4 days buy the 7 day ticket.

It's a 10 minute train ride from Oslo S (~15 from Nationaltheatret), and trains depart every 10 minutes. The convention center in Lillestrøm is right by the station, so if you stay reasonably close to one of the Oslo stations, it will be extremely convenient.

In the case of some of the very big events like Nor-Shipping, the train can get quite crowded, but usually it's fairly smooth since most people are commuting the other direction.

A 7 day ticket will cover all your travel in Oslo, even trip from/to the airport on local train with a supplementary ticket costing NOK 44.

Is there a particular train we need to take between Oslo and Lillestrom, or are there several? I'm seeing on the Jernbaneverket map lines like L1, R10, R11, L12, L13, L14. They all appear to stop at both Oslo S and Lillestrom.

Use the www.nsb.no travel planner - options will show. Stations in central Oslo will be Oslo S and Nationaltheateret - depending on where you choose to stay. Lillestrøm is prime commuter territory, there are plenty of trains.

Perhaps download the app.

There is a direct train through Romeriksporten tunnel every 10 minutes that takes 10 minutes from Oslo S to Lillestrøm, all lines except L1. Don't use line L1. It leaves every 15 minutes, bypasses the tunnel and takes 29 minutes, stopping at several small stations on the way. Direct trains from Oslo S to Lillestrøm usually leave from track 11, while direct trains from Lillestrøm to Oslo usually leave from track 1 or 6.

I agree. The L12, L13, L14, R10, or R11. The L1 takes forever. Unfortunately that's the one with destination "Lillestrøm" so it's an easy mistake to make.

A hint instead of remembering all those numbers is that they all scheduled to depart Oslo S on the 4th minute (:04, :14, :24, etc). Typically from Track 11, but that sometimes changes. (From Nationaltheatret, the trains are at the 8th minute, from one of the two tracks on the eastbound platform.)

One other thing to be aware of: The R10 and R11 have two special cars - a Komfort car that costs extra, and a Stille quiet car, which is free to use by any passenger, but you should avoid loud conversations. Both are labeled on the doors.
