Train from Welwyn to London for the day.
Save

I have a trip planned for myself and my wife on a Monday in mid August. We are staying at the PI in Welwyn and intend catching one of the earliest off peak trains into London, stay the day seeing the sights, travelling around on the tube and returning in the evening, probably around 8-9pm.

I see there are trains available for £13.50. Is it worth buying these on line in advance or just to get them at the station on the day. Is there a decent ticket office at the station?

Also, I see there is a McDonalds near the station, is it open yet?

There are no Advance fares between Welwyn GC and London. The £13.50 is a CDR Off peak Day Return and there is no point in buying in advance.

That fare does not include travel within London. An ODT Offpeak Day Travelcard is £20.70 and includes London travel zones 1-6. It may be cheaper to use a contactless payment card for London travel rather than buying a rail travelcard fare, especially if you are staying in zones 1 and 2.

There is a ticket office at the Howard Shopping Centre entrance with 3 windows.

That's good advice on the travelcard. So for the extra £7.20, I can have unlimited travel around zones 1-6. I will definately be making more than 4 trips on the tube so it will be worthwhile. But how can it be cheaper than this to use my contactless card? Is it capped at less than £7.20?

If you look on http://www.tfl.gov.hi you'll be able to see the daily caps, which are applied to contractors in the same way they are applied to Oyster cards. It also has a useful journey planner.

The daily caps for zones 1 & 2 is £7.20 and for zones 1 - 6 it's £13.20

The Zones 1-6 Travelcard extra £7.20 is the same as the Zones 1-2 contactless daily price cap. So if you stay in Zones 1-2 it makes no difference. But if you intend to go further the Travelcard is cheaper because the contactless daily price cap rises as you go through more zones, Zones 1-6 would be £13.20.

£7.20 is aso the cost of three Zone 1 only Undergound fares paid with contactless.

My apologies, that link should read http://www.tfl.gov.uk - blooming predictive text strikes again!

Make sure you take face coverings/ masks with you - they're mandatory on all Public Transport in London.

Tickets bought using cash (e.g at a ticket machine) are more expensive.
