Where To Stay While Golfing at Old Head

We will be flying into Cork for a 10 day golf and sight seeing trip. Our first round of golf is at Old Head and we are wondering where to stay for three nights while there. Some have suggested staying in Cork and exploring around there before and after golf, but that seems like quite a ways from Old Head. Others have suggested staying in Kinsale and exploring that area while not golfing, and or even staying at Old Head itself. After leaving Old Head we will be headed over to Killarney for three nights and a round of golf at Tralee and then our last stop will be Doonberg for golf at Trump International and Lahinch. We love playing golf, but want to explore the countryside and villages if we can while in this area of Ireland. Any input and suggestions for places to stay would be very appreciated!

I think you need to identify what else you want to see in the area. If the answer is places like Blarney, Cobh and Midleton Distillery, then Cork is the better option. If you want to see the coastal areas between Kinsale and Baltimore then Kinsale is best. If you want to get out to some of the peninsulas like Mizen or Sheep's Head, then you way as well stay further west and come back for the golf.

There's not that much hassle in getting between Cork and Kinsale. It's only a 30 minute drive (with another 15 minutes on to the Old Head). There are also one or two decent places to stay between the two.

Yes, you could easily stay in Cork city (lots of accommodation there) and make the daily trip to the golf course as Blackgreen mentioned.

In Kinsale itself, check out the following hotels

The Carlton (about 2 miles outside of Kinsale)

Actons

Blue Haven

The Trident.

The above three are in the town.

In Cork City for a bit of a treat check out Hayfield Manor.

Alternatively the following hotels are nice:

River Lee

Clayton

Imperial

In Killarney I recommend:

The Killarney Park

The Malton

The Europe

Plenty of golfing in Killarney, no need to go to Tralee unless you have a specific club there that you want to play at.

A couple of other places that may be worth a mention

- Maryborough House Hotel - It's a good hotel (probably only second in Cork to the Hayfield Manor). It's also in the suburbs 6km out on the right side for Kinsale, so that helps. And if you want to eat or drink, there are plenty of options in the centre of Douglas, which is a 15 minute walk from the hotel (there are also 4 buses an hour if you don't fancy the hill back). The hotel restaurant is very good, if a touch pricey.

- Innishannon House Hotel - Location wise this is perfect. It's 15 mins from Kinsale, 30 mins from the Old Head and 20 mins from Cork. It's just off the main road from Cork to West Cork, so access to everywhere is really easy. It also has a lovely location next to the river. The drawbacks here are that the hotel is a bit old-fashioned and that dining options around the Innishannon area are very limited. There's one decent daytime cafe, but otherwise you are likely to find yourself jumping in the car to drive to Kinsale, Cork or Bandon.

If you are playing Doonbeg and Lahinch when you get to Clare, you might like to stay in Spanish Point which would be close to both golf courses.

This hotel does some really good deals, has a lovely bar and very decent food.
