Assuming you are travelling by public transport, the easiest route is probably by bus or rail from Athlone to Galway and then by bus from Galway to Bunratty.

Is there a direct bus from Galway to Bunratty, which stops at the castle?

You would get the 72 from Athlone to Limerick and then the 343 up to Bunratty takes about 3hours depending on connection
