Early January visit - Camogli or Cinque Terre

Hi, our family (Mum, Dad & 2 teenage girls) plan on being in this part of Italy in early January, and are considering visiting Camogli or Cinque Terre for a couple of days.

We don't want crowds and are happy to skip the commercial/touristy stuff, so are not too worried if villages are quiet, but understand that if everything is closed, it won't be much fun. We are also unsure if Camogli would be better than Cinque Terre or somewhere else.

We are hoping for quaint/historic townships lovely coastal views, rustic cafes/restaurants, warm people, nice walks etc..

Any thoughts, suggestions or alternate ideas would be gratefully accepted.

Thanks, Ben

Both areas will be very quiet in January. Camogli does have the advantage of the only boats to operate in winter (sea conditions permitting) as San Fruttuoso is not accessible by road http://www.golfoparadiso.it/en/go/blue-line/

But you might find it more amusing to be somewhere with a larger resident population, e.g. Santa Margherita Ligure (five minutes from Camogli by train) as more will be open.

Thanks for the prompt reply. We had not considered Santa Margherita Ligure, so shall look at that option.

If Santa Margherita Ligure is just a short train ride away from Camogli, we could base ourselves there and visit Camogli and Cinque Terre on day trips?

Are they all on the same train line?

If yes, how long would a train trip to Cinque Terre take and should we consider a day trip from SML to there too?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be gratefully received.

Thanks Again, Ben

Personally I would much prefer staying in Rapallo, one of my favorite towns. Dinners at Da Mario. Any interest in Genoa it's one hour away, other close destinations. Adventurous souls can walk to Portofino on the red carpet trail. Ferries not running but train to Santa Margherita Ligure 3 minutes; lunch at Dal Alfredo [closed Monday]. I would not include Camogli that time of year. Not much to see with the main attraction swimming in crustal clear waters. Direct trains Levanto and Monterosso :45; Vernazza a little over an hour.

Rapallo is a great option to consider.

How to split time between 5 Terre and Rapallo?

Yo go to CT you can use train form SML/Rapallo. At Monterosso (the first of CT from Rapalloand SML) stops many trains: There are even train between CT villages

For trains on the line between Camogli, Santa Margherita Ligure, Rapallo and the Cinque Terre (e.g. Monterosso, Vernazza) see www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en - use a date in early December to see the likely frequency of service in January. January train times will not be online until late November at the earliest, but will not be very different (if at all) from times in early December.

Rapallo is larger than Santa Margherita, so will be slightly busier, but it's a matter of taste. Santa Margherita is nearer the extensive walking trail network on the Portofino Peninsula - see www.portofinotrek.com/trek/gb/6-trail-map
