TRAFFIC: Frequent 1-2 hrs getting back to Carmel from BS

Is anyone reading these forum comments? Since Hwy 1 is not open south of Big Sur, if you visit Big Sur, you have to return to Carmel and the Monterey Peninsula. There is major road construction at Hwy 1 and Rio Road in Carmel which causes regular daily 1-2 hour traffic delays getting back into town, even worse on the weekends. Also there are no restrooms between Big Sur and Carmel. Construction is slated through to end of summer. Recommend visiting Big Sur later in the year.

This week, along with the Rio Road intersection construction project, Caltrans is repaving portions of Highway 1 between Rio Road and Garrapata State Park. Not a good week on Highway 1.

Hi - We are planning on being in the area on Aug 8th and 9th, and are trying to decide whether to spend a night in Ripplewood or Fernwood (the only Big Sur hotels within our budget), or stay in Carmel and visit Big Sur from there. Are these traffic problems anticipated to continue throughout the summer?

Thanks.

Anna

Probably, yes. But don't let that deter you from visiting the area. Big Sur is worth every minute being stuck in traffic.

Thanks! Any advice about whether we should stay in Big Sur itself for one night, or make Carmel our base?

Carmel has more to offer in terms of lodging, dining, shopping within walking distance of most lodging. Everything in Big Sur's "village" area is spread out over about 6 miles.

Big Sur offers sleeping under the redwoods and/or near the Big Sur River, though. Just keep in mind that both Fernwood and Ripplewood lodging is on the rustic side, so if you're looking for more comfortable digs, might not be right for you.

Did you look at Big Sur Lodge?

The construction is supposed to continue through the end of August. It's mainly been a weekend/holiday problem but we also haven't hit full summer traffic yet.

There's going to be more roadwork between Highlands and Garrapata next week.

Caltrans will continue repaving Highway 1 next week (June 18 to 22). There will be lane closures with vehicles allowed in only 1 direction at a time between Gorda and Esalen, the exact location in that area will vary by day. Additional paving work will also occur south of Carmel Highlands near Garrapata Creek. Then of course there is the ongoing construction work around Rio Road.

Weekday visitors should allow extra travel time next week.

PattyC, the Caltrans Lane Closure page at

…ca.gov/SearchDistrictsPreAction.do…

is listing additional Highway 1 work not in the Monterey County Cone Zone Report.

I do not know why the discrepancy.

FresnoFacts,

I didn't even know about the lane closure between Lime Creek Bridge and Gorda. It's hard to keep up with the amount of roadwork lately!

We are staying at Rio Sands Hotel (up toward Santa Cruz) next weekend (June 22-24). This is our first trip to the area. Our plan was to drive down to the Big Sur area to see the coastal sights, but would you suggest not going any further south than Carmel due to the road construction? I'm assuming there's lots of beautiful coastline between Rio Sands and Carmel. Would you recommend staying away from Carmel completely on the weekend until another time?
