Cairns in January

Oh, dear, we are planning on being in Cairns around January 19 on and now we see that it will probably be wet and no activities in the water due to stingers.

We still want to go to the GBR, but what can we do there without rough seas? Also, where would we go for some snorkling and beach activities where we can count on the weather? Sydney? Gold Coast? Melbourne?

Funny thing about the seas, they are very calm during that time unless there is a cyclone. The wilder seas are during the winter time up to September.

Snorkelling will be very good at that time providing the weather is not extreme. Beaches will not be so nice as stingers can be flushed out of their estaurine environment by rain and the water too warm and stirred up. Out on the reef conditions should be better though risk of low pressure systems at that time.

So yes risky but not definite bad time, just much higher possibility of long period of rain that say November or December.

For beach much better down south that time of year, stick to boating activities near Cairns or Rainforest streams and waterfalls. Quite stunning if you can handle the humidity.

Makes sense! I think we will do a day in Port Douglas, the Skyrail and Kuranda Scenic Railway, and maybe a boat out to look at the reef. Glass bottom boat? Snorkeling?

Thanks for the help!

Glass bottom boats or more commonly semi-submersibles do not actually travel over the reef proper. Well not my experience anyways. They jsut do edges as not to damage the reefs that can almost be at surface level. Best don your flippers for a great experience.
