Most safest area?

Hi everyone

I will be coming to Melbourne and staying for 6 weeks for work with my wife. I've looked at the following areas for apartments: Docklands, CBD, South Bank, South Melbourne and South Yarra. Which of those is the safest area? It seems like if we want to be close to everything (restaurants, food markets, entertainment) then Docklands, CBD or South Bank would be the best area?

It's all quite safe.

Where will be your primary location for work?

Melbourne is generally safe - as are all Australian cities.

Probably safer than just about any place in the USA.

"Melbourne is generally safe - as are all Australian cities"

As long as you don't stray too far from the city in wrong direction.

They are all quite safe.

Docklands is a handy location if you are working in that area but it's a bit of a wasteland of big buildings otherwise.

I would choose CBD or South Bank (though I don't know your specific needs).

I live and work in the CBD. Perfectly safe. Just take the same precautions you would do in your own city or any other city in the world - ie don't roam down dark deserted laneways with $50 note in your hand.

South Bank, South Yarra, and South Melbourne would be my top pick, especially South Yarra although may not be as convenient as the other two comparingly but you get a more homely feel since it is mostly residential. Check out South Melbourne market while you are there!

I totally agree with KVE. "Where will be your primary location for work?"

They are all safe areas, but I think the final choice will come down to the ease of getting to and from your work place.

I agree with most people Melbourne is safe anywhere you stay - just like other major cities just have a good general awareness and don't get isolated. I would stay in the area that you are working.

Have a great time in Melbourne.

CBD, South Bank and Docklands are all fine. South Yarra is fine too, but can be noisy at night with all the bars and clubs, it's a popular area for teens and young people. I've heard from friends who still live in Melbourne that St Kilda has gone back to being a bit unsafe due to the drug called "Ice" which has wreaked havoc over there. Of course I suspect that's still nothing compared to the bad suburbs of Las Vegas or LA.
