Holiday Inn vs Crowne Plaza for location - any difference?

Hi

I'm heading to Melbourne for a few days next month for the main reason of running the City2Sea on Sunday 13 November. Given everything is quite expensive around that weekend and/or booked out already I want to use reward points I have to stay at either the Holiday Inn or Crowne Plaza. It seems their rankings on here are virtually the same, I was wondering if either has a slightly better location for trams etc? They seem only about a five minute walk apart from what I can tell so there's probably no difference, but as I will be travelling alone, hopeless with direction and am not familiar with Melbourne so if one is slightly closer to a tram stop on more of a main route this would sway me.

I was thinking the Holiday Inn might be slightly more central so far as there seems like there might be more right around it than Crowne Plaza being a bit more isolated? I won't be going to the casino either. So far the plan is to get to the Arts Centre for the race start, perhaps go to Rippon Lea Estate, and The Local Taphouse pub on Carlisle Street St Kilda. No other firm plans, just general wandering around or getting the free trams to hop on and off.

Thanks a lot.

Hello tira3,

There is more than one Holiday Inn, so I'm not sure which one you mean. However Crowne Plaza is right on the river on Spencer Street at the western end of the city grid and has numerous trams going right past or nearby, and a short walk to Southern Cross Station (same ticket does for both, plus busses). It is a pleasant short walk on either side of the river to the Arts Centre for the start of your race.

They are very close to each other so location wise there's very little difference. Crowne Plaza probably has a slight edge as the free tram goes past it - but really there'snothing in it.

Crowne Plaza to the Arts Centre you just walk over Spencer St bridge and along Southbank promenade till you get there - about a 10 minute walk or a 15 minute stroll.

If you jog it makes for a nice warm up. ;-)

If you can get a room overlooking the river then the Crowne is definitely nicer.

Good luck in the race and I hope the weather is kind to you on the day.

Hi,

Another vote for the Crowne Plaza it overlooks the river & its just a short walk to Southbank & the city. Ask for a riverview room.

Hi

May I know how far if one were to walk from Crowne Plaza to the city area, is it like 5 min or so?

My family is also in the midth of deciding where to put in our coming trip to Melbourne.

Thank you.

Crown plaza to Bouke St Mall in the city centre is about a 15 minute stroll - but the free City Circle Tram goes past it so v easy with kids.

Hi Eva,

I walked from the Hilton this week from Southbank into Bourke St Mall via the Crowne Plaza - I actually timed it... it took 25mins from the Hilton & 15mins from the Crowne Plaza.. ( no; I'm not bored ! )

Just waiting for the shops to open !!
