Best stops Wellington to Napier

Hello experts... we two mature guys have a gap of 4 days from our stay in Porirua before we have a booking in Napier... from Dec 30, 2017 to Jan 03, 2018 (so New Year's Eve to consider). We will take Intercity bus, but want to either stop somewhere like Palmerston North mid way to break up the long bus ride. Do you recommend any other bus stop towns that are unique mid way to Napier? Otherwise, it might be best to stay in Wellington area for New Year's.

Also, we do not drive, but will be in Auckland most of February 2018, and want to arrange good bus tours to the Northland scenes... maybe several separate day trips or an overnight. Any recommendations for reliable tour agencies or bus tours in the North will be great. Thanks in advance for all your good Kiwi wisdom.

Hi Ron,

Stay in Wellington over NYE. The capital becomes lively on NY night, with entertainment and fireworks over the harbour.

For Northland, have a look at Stray, Kiwi Experience or a Mana/Naked bus pass. If you only want to go from A to B, then Intercity is once again a good way to travel.

Thank you, Frangipani08, for your quick and helpful response. We are booking Wellington for NYE, and will check the tour bus options as well. Best to you.

If you have advice for daytrips from Rotorua while we are there, please share. We Will have been to Napier, but would like more seaside experiences- something easygoing like boat tours.

Yoou could try a fishing charter maybe; they might be able to organise pick up. There are several lakes around Rotorua or within an hours drive you have Whakatane (White Island), Ohope (beach) or Mt Maunganui (beach and lovely harbour). If fishing isn't your thing, a ride out on the lakes, trip to White Island or boat ride on Tauranga harbour would be nice. Mt Maunganui also has a great town centre with cafes, bars and is generally pretty lively.

To add, you'd probably enjoy spending a couple of nights at Mt Maunganui (one of the best places to be in NZ in February). Intercity bus connections are pretty good (from nearby Tauranga).

Rotorua has lots of activities, from a lake cruises, to kayaking, white water rafting, bush walks, the Redwood Forest, canopy walks, Skyline gondola, luge and zorb, mountain biking, running trails, hot pools, waterfalls, thermal parks, Maori culture, flight-seeing. Aim to spend at least 2 nights in the city, or more for a day-trip to Taupo. Travel to Taupo and back using one of the thermal shuttles from Rotorua city.

Good idea to spend several nights at Mt Maunganui. Scuba diving, fishing charters and eco-cruises from Mt Maunganui or Tauranga.

Buy an Intercity bus pass to get around the North Island.
