Should we stay near Auckland Airport or head into the city?

Hello, we arrive in Auckland 1st night of our honeymoon on Sunday end of Oct around 5pm. Should we stay around Auckland airport for the night so we can wake up early & hire a car from the airport to drive to Coromandel? Or are we wasting a night by staying near the airport and should go into the city for the night. My thoughts are by the time we get into the city, it will be getting quite late with public transport etc. Cant drive til the morning because we will be boozey from the flight. Other hand, is there not many nice restaurants etc near the airport. We will be coming back to Auckland city later in the week for 2 nights. Thoughts?

Bad planning! Always best to have a couple of restful days at the beginning of a trip.

Given that you want restaurants etc probably best to head into the City. It will be light until around 8 pm.

Pick up your car from a city depot next morning.

I'm inclined to suggest otherwise. I've stayed at the Holiday Inn on several occasions, both as a traveller and to attend conferences. This is a very nice, quiet hotel with the Vapor restaurant and separate bar. Nice rooms if you select one that is facing the inner gardens and pool area. Holiday Inn provides a coach which you need to pay for from the international terminal.

One of the issues with inner city accommodation is the extra distance and effort to get to. Holiday Inn is barely 10 minutes from the airport, whereas the CBD is 40 minutes via the Avondale tunnel. But driving out the following day means you need to cover that distance by motorway, and Auckland has busy roads and motorway systems. Much easier to collect a rental car from an airport location, as opposed to a city depot which will lead you onto busy motorway junctions. The airport has the SW motorway which is newer and more user-friendly.
