Fishing - without a boat - recommendations?

Hi All,

Can anyone recommend options (jetty/ rock walls/ beach etc) for fishing without a boat. We will be in Napier for a couple of weeks in January/Feb 2023 and hubby likes to fish.

Thanks!

Mad fishing family so I asked them as we live in the area. First question - do you only do saltwater fishing or do you like fly fishing rivers?

Thank you, we have never 'fly' fished just normal rods and hand lines only.

A lot of people fish opposite Ravensdown towards Clive around the estuary area . If you have a car you can also drive further afield. If you look at the link below it will give you some ideas of good spots.

No problem. Some other tips that you may already know but just in case:

Be very careful to check tides and where you are fishing when on the beach, especially in the Napier area. The water even on the edge can look deceptively calm. There have been some sad tragedies with unexpected rogue waves.

Sadly cars being broken into can be a feature of parking even in big public parking areas. It is not wise to leave anything in plain sight and definitely no valuables.

Be diligent about fish size. We take this very seriously and fines are dished out if you are caught - check online for size and quotas for the different fish (may not be an issue if you are putting most back).

Depending what bait you plan on using you can get it from some petrol stations or the fishing shops.

Happy planning!
