Itinerary help needed for Wellington base

Hello, we are a family with young children and grandparents looking to visit north island in early march 2018. If I have 7 nights to spend and arrive and depart from Wellington airport, how would you propose I spend the nights? Will rent a MPV and our interest lies in nature, nature, wildlife and farm animals. Thank you!

Consider taking the ferry over to Picton & picking up your MPV there.

1. Arrive WLG; taxi or bus to city hotel (2N)

2. Explore city on foot - Te Papa, Cable Car, Botanic Gardens, Zealandia Sanctuary via free shuttle bus etc

3. AM ferry to Picton; rent MPV; Drive to Nelson (2N)

4. Day trip by water taxi in Abel Tasman NP

5. Return to Picton & water taxi to resort or AirBnB in Queenn Charlotte Sound (2N)

6. Relax/explore/kayak/hike

7. Return to WLG by ferry or SoundsAir flight.

Should you decide to focus on the lower North Island, you could stay 2 nights in Wellington to visit Te Papa, Zealandia, and Weta workshop before driving a loop and back to Wellington.

day 1 - Arrive Wellington (2 nights)

day 2 - Wellington city/surrounds

day 3 - drive to Wairarapa (1 night), visit Castle Point

day 4 - Mt Bruce/Pukaki native bird recovery, continue to Napier (2 nights)

day 5 - National Aquarium, Napier city.

day 6 - Taupo, to Turangi/Tongariro NP - short alpine walks

day 7 - Turangi to Wellington via Kapiti Coast/SH1.

Apologies - the name of the Wairarapa native bird recovery centre is Pukaha-Mt Bruce. Not the name of a lake in the South Island!

I think Frangipani's itinerary if generally good for your interests, but I wouldn't go to Taupo/Turangi, as this adds a lot of travel which might be tiring for a family with young children and older people. Instead, consider going to Cape Kidnappers in Napier or the Arataki Honey Centre in Hastings while you're there. Rush Munro's Ice Cream Garden in Hastings has the best ice cream too.

On the way back to Wellington, Dannevirke is a good place to stop. While it has cafes and shops, you might enjoy the Dannevirke Domain. The upper domain has gardens and a children's play area with a Viking ship, while the lower domain has a duck pond, aviary and deer park.

I would also consider staying 2 nights in the Wairarapa and perhaps going to visit the seal colony at Cape Palliser.

Selsy, thank you for the recommendation. I will drop Turangi/ Taupo as we do have young children who doesn't like long car rides.

Keep those recommendations coming ! :)
