Take a tram ride where you can hop on/off where you like. Walk around the gorgeous Botanical gardens. Punting on the river Avon. Trip out to ride the Gondola. This should quite easily fill a day!
Thanks Louise D
Interests? Will you have a car?
The Antarctic Centre, near the airport has penguins and a free shuttle bus;
Willowbank Wildlife Park has kiwi;
As well as the tram, which only covers the inner city, there are 2 Ho-Ho bus routes: a sort of inner route that includes the lovely gardens at Mona Vale & Riccarton House & an outermost one that includes Willowbank;
If you don’t have a car, walking is an easy way to see the city, the Museum, Art Gallery, old & new cathedrals and the Earthquake memorial (Oi Manawatu) - all of which are free.
Cobweb day, for sure. If the weather is halfway OK and you like gardens, Zhuhai's suggestion of Riccarton (with a genuine native New Zealand mini-forest with a predator-proof fence next to the historic house) and Mona Vale is quite worthwhile. They're in lovely upscale neighborhoods. The Botanic Garden and adjacent museum are excellent. I need to revisit the Botanic Garden's store. They were selling splendid made in USA garden flamingos. A bit too big to put in luggage and I have been absolutely unable to find the supplier.
Thank you all. Very informative.
