Public transport from Porto to central major sites

Greetings Porto experts... We are based in Porto for 2 weeks, starting next week. After we enjoy Porto people and culture, we want to visit Aveiro, Braga, Douro Valley (by boat?), Guimaraes, and Viana do Castelo. And possible Vigo, Spain. We will book some guided tours, such as walking tours or special historical edifices. However, we prefer to use trains or buses as we are independent visitors, wanting to leisurely enjoy the wonders of Portugal. Please advise about user friendly sites for trains and buses. Thank you very much for you assistance. We are jazzed for this adventure!

The Portuguese Railways' web site is www.cp.pt. You can go from the home page to the English-language version of the site by clicking the menu icon (four horizontal lines, located in the upper left corner of the screen), and then clicking on "EN".

Each of the major bus companies has a web site. For example, hwww.rede-expressos.pt/ and www.rodonorte.pt

Each of these web sites allows you to access timetables and to purchase tickets on line.

Thanks David F... I'll check and save these sites. What is your opinion on which of these cities are 'doable' in the same day, without racing around too much? Also, any leads to Douro Valley wine tours including the boat trip would be great.

Both Braga and Guimarães are around 1 hour by train from Porto, fairly compact and to both of which I have made pleasant and rewarding day trips. Guimarães has a cable car ride up to the mountain that can be enjoyed.

These cities are served by commuter trains which cannot be reserved nor can tickets be bought in advance. A ticket there and back is only €6,30. At the CP website mentioned, find 'Urbanos Porto' and then download the times for those two lines. Aveiro is on a different line, but also part of the Porto Urban network with similar fares.

Viana do Castelo is not on Porto's Urbanos network, but a nice ride on regional trains, these also cannot be reserved or booked.

Vigo is probably best done by bus as there are only two trains a day. For bus times, fares and tickets see either www.autna.com (site is only in Spanish) or www.alsa.es which is available in English.

Some Douro excursions are one way by boat, the other way by train as a boat both ways takes too long. Something I have never doen though.
