24 Hours in WA

Due to a rescheduled Qantas flight, my husband & I now have an unexpected 24 hour stopover in Perth prior to flying to Bali in October. We decided to turn this in to a positive and want to maximise our time there but so far finding it difficult to choose somewhere good to spend a Saturday night.... it would seem that Fremantle is preferable to Perth for charm, restaurants etc - can anyone recommend accommodation for 1 night only in Freo, preferably central to everything.

Many thanks.

Port Mill Bed and Breakfast or the Esplanade Hotel are the best and very central. Fothergills is also very good but a short walk out of town.

Many thanks for the feedback to date - have checked out all suggestions but remain undecided mainly due to the mixed reviews on all 3 on TA. Had almost opted for Fothergills until the issues of road noise and distance from town kept cropping up - we don't mind a "short walk", but some reviews state it's a "long walk"- is anyone able to clarify driving time (not sure yet if we'll hire a car from the airport or taxi) and or walking time between Fothergills and the main eateries and attractions?

If we opt to stay overnight in Perth instead, does anyone have a recommendation?

Thanks once again.

I wouldn't want to walk from Fothergills into the main drag of Freo at night - about 10 - 15 minutes depending on fitness and it is up hill going back :-) Parking in Freo, especially on a Saturday night, is a pain in the B but if you went in early enough it is only a 3 minute drive to the main parking area next to Freo Oval.

For one night I'd probably opt for The Esplanade for ease of access.

The Esplanade faces the Freamantle harbour - just a short walk across the park to the waterfront (5 mins) where you can go to Little Creatures brewery (bit of a Freo icon and on our "must go" list for our visitors,) also choices of other places like Cicerellos and other cafes/options along the boardwalk.

Also Freo has its weekend markets and the historic Sail and Anchor pub. Even a statue of Bon Scott if you happen to be an ACDC fan!

Agree with convenience of The Esplanade. Great location. Reliable quality. And beautiful location.

Thanks to everyone for suggestions and advice. It came down to having to decide between Port Mill B&B and The Esplanade, and we've chosen Port Mill as it seems to suit our needs. Will review on TA when we return from Bali late October.

Thanks again.

Having decided on Port Mill B&B in Fremantle for our overnight stay, can anyone advise how much we can expect to pay for a taxi from Perth airport (travelling Saturday mid morning) and or any advice on how reliable the airport shuttle is as an alternative? Decided against hiring a car as it looks like it'll be a waste when all we need is transport to and from the airport.

Thanks again.

Although i've never used it, Quaint A...e have a shuttle into the city from the airport which is free for their passengers (see main Perth forum site for more info.) If you can get dropped off at the train station, specify Wellington Street, it's a nice trip on the train from Perth to Freo. The walk from Freo train station to the Esplanade should take you 10-15 mins, longer if you stop for a coffee on the Cappucino strip!
