Itinerary help!!

2 adults 3 children (17,14,9)

We have 16 nights flying into SFO and out it LAX and we have a car for the whole trip.

This is our itinerary so far:

3 night San Fran - Airbnb flat booked

3 nights Yosemite - Tenaya lodge booked

2 nights driving down the coast - advice needed where to stop

4 nights Hollywood - not booked

4 nights Anaheim - not booked

Advice needed, what would you change?

Would you recommend Anaheim before Hollywood?

Thanks

Kerry

>>2 nights driving down the coast - advice needed where to stop<<

You'll want to spend 2 nights in the Monterey area, which gives you a full day to explore Big Sur, which is arguably the highlight of the coast. (Read about the road closure that makes this necessary in the Top Questions on the right, using a full web browser.)

Ideally, you could pull a third night from somewhere else to spend south of Big Sur... Pismo Beach, Santa Barbara.

Don't rent a car on arrival in SF. You'll save a couple of hundred dollars by NOT having a car in the city (even if parking is included with your lodging). If the Airbnb is refundable, you might post the specific location in the SF Forum to make sure it's in a decent area.

Are you aware of the distance/time involved to 'commute' from Tenaya Lodge to Yosemite Valley, which is where the majority of iconic sights are located? Or is your planned sightseeing elsewhere in the park?

Sfsusan, thank you for your reply, we are staying in the Richmond area in SF, I will look at picking the car up after SF. Would you recommend using the BART with 3 children?

Regards Teneya to Yosemite valley, it’s calculated at just over 1 hour, does that sound right? We don’t mind driving and Teneya looks beaut!

Monterey looks a good choice, I will do some research.

Thanks kerry

Hi

For detailed information about your chosen destinations, I recommend using that city/destination forum. Open the full TripAdvisor website and look at the Top Questions on the right.

On the Yosemite forum, read about the various areas in the National Park. Yes, Tenaya Lodge in Fish Camp is about an hour to Yosemite Valley. It's over an hour to Glacier Point. But it's near Mariposa Grove. Set your draft itinerary for Yosemite then post on that forum.

In addition to this state forum's Top Questions about Hwy 1, also use the Monterey forum and use MrToy's website.

The L.A. forum is especially good. Choose a few hotels that fit your budget and ask the kind folks on the L.A. forum which one is 'best' for your chosen L.A. itinerary.

And then use the Anaheim forum.

Happy Planning!

BART from the airport would be fine if you weren't staying in the Richmond District. Just use wingz.me, Lyft or Uber for a door-to-door trip that probably won't be much more expensive than BART to town (for 4? people) and then a taxi to your accommodations. (And it is the Richmond "District" of SF where you're staying, not the "town" of Richmond, yes?)

>>We don’t mind driving and Teneya looks beaut!<<

Keep in mind that hour (or more) of driving is mountain driving, not a wide, flat freeway. If you drive back after dark, go slow as there may well be critters sharing the road with you.

The Big Sur is beautiful. Take your time there. I drove on the 17 mile drive which was beautiful...will never forget these unique sunsets there <3

You dont mention when this visit is for? That would be helpful to know. As far as whether to visit Anaheim or LA first, it really doesnt matter as both are accessible to LAX. But dates may make a different for Disneyland.

Here is the Anaheim forum to post in for questions about where to stay etc for Disneyland, and you would also want to post in the specific City forums you are wanting to visit so they can comment on your itinerary to help you.

When is your trip? Rte. 1 through Big Sur is supposed to reopen sometime this fall, so the advice will be different this year vs 2019.

Hi

Will you be in California over the busy Memorial Day holiday weekend?

Will your family be okay with the 1 hour drive to Yosemite Valley and the 1 hour drive back? Amenity-rich Tenaya Lodge is popular, but the location isn't as convenient as staying in Yosemite Valley.

Do you mean May/June 2019, i.e. next year? If so, then I'd stay one night in Monterey, and one night in Morro Bay or Pismo.
